SALMO has been forced to delay the procurement of a new build ROV with object manipulation capability at 6000 meters depth to 2025/26. But in the meanwhile has procured a pre-owned ROV with similar capabilities directly from Forum Engineering Technology (UK) Ltd.

First Sea Lord visited RFA Proteus in Birkenhead today.

Note: the ship is equipped with a large transverse ROV hangar with Launch and Recovery System (LARS) to lower equipment over the side (through the 5 doors in the ship's side under the bridge).

In-service date for seabed surveillance vessel RFA Proteus slips from summer to autumn

Conversion work on RFA Proteus is now in its eighth month and she is still in the shipyard. This former commercial vessel will become the UK’s first Multi-Role Ocean Surveillance (MROS) ship. She was purchased in response to the growing threats to critical subsea infrastructure and was expected to be operational by now.

RFA Proteus puts to sea for the first time since conversion

The UK’s first Multi-Role Ocean Surveillance (MROS) ship RFA Proteus sailed from Birkenhead today following conversion work.

The vessel was purchased for £70 Million from Topaz Marine, a subsidiary of P&O Maritime and arrived at Cammell Laird for conversion to her new role in January. The MoD had promised she would be “operational in Summer 2023” but crew generation and safety certification issues are understood to have delayed her exit from the shipyard until now. After sea trials, Proteus will head to the south coast before she is formally named at a ceremony to be held in London during October.

Proteus will be dedicated to safeguarding critical seabed infrastructure and will act as a ‘mother ship’, operating remote and autonomous off-board systems for underwater surveillance and seabed warfare.
