Minesweepers: Kormoran (Cormorant) Class

Unread post by greendragon »

Polish Navy have received two more minesweepers or minehunters of the Cormorant class.
Built by a GVT run yard and private companies they have ben built on time and just passed trials.
Hulls of the ships have been welded from special anti-magnetic steel and their anti mine equipment is very modern, state of art stuff, robots, "kamikaze type robots" etc.
Three more have been order with delivery planned in second part of the decade.
Two of the first batch which were commissioned in NOV last year and FEB 2023 have not been armed yet because they supposed to ave a defensive armament in form of OSU 35 guns. The gun designed and built by the Polish companies and are equal in performance to other countries equivalents.
More details can be found on Wiki.
Traditionally as from the pre WW2 PL navy the minehunters have been named with names of birds.
Flotilla of Polish minesweepers built in Poland was fighting in September 1939. Some were destroyed , many survived the war and after service under German flag were found and returned to Poland.
The class was called " ptaszki" (probably "birdies" in BE, small birds) and their successors today also have names of birds: Kormoran(Cormorant), Albatros (Albatross) and Mewa(Seagull).
As seen two the newest ones are not armed with guns yet.
