Royal Navy formally announces the names of the ‘inspiration class’ Type 31 frigates

Speaking today at the First Sea Lord’s Sea Power Conference, Admiral Tony Radakin announced the names of the five Type 31 frigate being constructed for the Royal Navy in Rosyth; HMS Active, HMS Bulldog, HMS Campbeltown, HMS Formidable and HMS Venturer.

This is something of a break from convention in naming practice, as there is no theme or initial letter that links the class names together. Instead they have been chosen based on the inspirational qualities of ships that formerly carried their name and officially will be known as the Inspiration class. According to the RN, names have selected to represent key themes around future missions. HMS Active – technology and innovation. Operations in the North Atlantic – HMS Bulldog. The Future Commando Force – HMS Campbeltown. Aircraft carrier operations – HMS Formidable. Forward deployment of ships around the globe to protect UK interests – HMS Venturer.

Sea Ceptor missile chosen to arm Type 31 Frigates

MBDA’s Sea Ceptor system will protect the Royal Navy’s new Type 31 frigates under a contract awarded by the Ministry of Defence.
Sea Ceptor utilises the Common Anti-Air Modular Missile (CAMM), it offers close-in air defence and local-area air defence.
MBDA claims that the missile has a “wide target set”, including the capability to engage small naval vessels, which would give the missile a limited surface-to-surface role.

Just to confirm the class name Inspiration.

Type 31 Frigates designated as the ‘Inspiration class’

The names of the five future frigates were revealed at the First Sea Lord’s Seapower conference held in Arundel House.

“I welcome the announcement of the names of the Inspiration-class. Each of the names has been chosen for evoking those values we strive for: cutting-edge technology, audacity and global operations,” Admiral Radakin said.

“They represent the best of Britain’s world-class shipbuilding heritage and will fly the flag for decades to come.”

The Type 31s replace five general-purpose Type 23 frigates which have served the Royal Navy with distinction since the early 1990s.

All five Inspiration-class vessels will be assembled at the Babcock yard in Rosyth, where a new construction hall is nearing completion.

The first steel is due to be cut on the ships this summer and all five are due to be in service by 2028, operating alongside Type 26 or City-class frigates which will be dedicated submarine hunters and will replace the equivalent specialist Type 23s.
