The latest events in which Osprey MV22 aircraft were destroyed and number of their crews and passengers were killed brings to some thinking that this "flying machine" is too dangerous to users.
Lets follow the great Professor Blackett mathematics and statistics way of dealing with the information.
Ospreys flew since their appearance to the USMC 420 000 light hours, half of them in the past 5 years.
The average mishap for them is 3.16 per 100 000 flight hours.
And it is lower number than for other USMC types :AV8 Harrirer, F/A 18, F 35 and CH 53 .
3.16 mishap rate is close to the total Marine Aviation 3.1 per 100 000 flight hours.
Ospreys fly nearly double of the Corps other rotating wing platform and is really true workhorse of the USMC.
Anyway , the Marine and NAVY aviation of the US is as seen in statistic of casualties as the most dangerous part of the services by far exceeding other cases of mishaps and causing many casualties.
Amazingly the most dangerous part of US matelots service is off duty time on leave , other shore non duty "assignments" in swimming, motor bike/car accident and others (this is from my previous research presented in the former WNF ).
This also confirms this old matelot saying that "the most dangerous for real sailors is solid land and it should be avoided as much as possible".
