WW1 graves rededicated after bodies of sailor-soldiers finally identified

The graves of two 'unknown' Great War sailor-soldiers have been identified by MOD 'war detectives' and rededicated with full honours in France.

Lieutenant Alfred Cookson and Sub Lieutenant John Francis St Clair Barton were both killed serving with the Royal Naval Division – sailors who fought as soldiers in the trenches, but firmly maintained their naval identity.

The bodies of both men were not identified at the time of their deaths in 1918, but work by the MOD’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre ensured their names could finally be added to their headstones.
