Well, here was me, and most of you if you're honest with yourselves, thinking LCS 1 Freedom and LCS 2 Independence had names extolling the virtues of Democracy.

In fact both names are to honour the multiple US cities with these names, apparently 17 and 12 apiece. LCS were at first named for US mid tier cities, small towns and other US Communities. So, that covers pretty much any US town everywhere.
It was then adjusted to regionally important US cities and communities.

Ho hum, is there a difference there.

That is unless you are Gabrielle Giffords where an exception occured 10 Feb 2012 when LCS 10 was named for the former representative !?!

Sole exception. Alas. No. How many exceptions can one have. LCS 30 Canberra named for a city not even in the Northern hemisphere.

Now, Ypsilanti you ask. On second thoughts. Don't.

I feel sooooooooooooo much safer now: the latest "TRANSFORMATIONAL" PO$ LC$ was launched sideways yesterday: the MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL LCS 21.

Therefore the Italian Fleet got the first of their new PPA design-a WARship, but we got another essentially useless LC$. They might be ok as floating targets, but the small crew and we taxpayer$ might object.......... :x DFO

USN might try: "are they now attempting to make a silk purse from a sows ear", but so far absolutely NO word on what-if ANYTHING-can be done to make these tubs useful in naval combat. Same for the 3 ultra-co$tly ZUMWALTs...... Meanwhile we taxpayer$ continue to pay; and then there I$ the $13 billion EDSEL...err FORD non functional carrier...........DFO

Littoral Combat Ship 19 delivered To US Navy
Lockheed Martin and Fincantieri Marinette Marine have delivered the future USS St. Louis, Littoral Combat Ship 19, to the U.S. Navy.

“With LCS 19’s delivery, the U.S. Navy has 10 Freedom-variant Littoral Combat Ships in the fleet. LCS 7 recently deployed, and it is gratifying to know that our team has delivered a ship that is relevant for today’s fight and that is needed around the world,” said Joe DePietro, Lockheed Martin vice president and general manager, Small Combatants and Ship Systems.

“Our team is encouraged by the positive feedback we’ve received about LCS 7 on deployment, and we continuously look to incorporate fleet input into capabilities on LCS hulls.”

Today, say Lockheed, the Freedom-variant LCS delivers advanced capability in anti-submarine, surface and mine countermeasure missions.

“LCS was designed to evolve with the changing security environment. Today, as we see an increase in near-peer competition from large nation states, Lockheed Martin is partnering with the Navy to evolve LCS to meet these threats.”

Upgrades are already underway – their computing infrastructure is receiving cyber upgrades and naval strike missiles are being installed in support of upcoming deployments.

LCS 19 is the tenth Freedom-variant LCS designed, built and delivered by the Lockheed Martin-led industry team and will be commissioned in Pensacola, Florida, this summer.

“Fincantieri Marinette Marine’s shipbuilders are proud to deliver these proven warships, and we are honored to continue working with our partner Lockheed Martin and our customer, the U.S. Navy, to give them the capabilities to keep our nation and her interests safe,” said Jan Allman, Fincantieri Marinette Marine CEO, in a news release.

The U$N is now going to $AVE $$$$$$:

"WASHINGTON — The Navy’s first four littoral combat ships will be headed into mothballs next March, according to a June 20 message from the chief of naval operations.

The littoral combat ships Freedom, Independence, Fort Worth and Coronado will all be inactivated on March 31, 2021, with Coronado being commissioned just six years ago.

The Navy decided to cut the ships to save money on modernization efforts as it faces a mountain of shipbuilding bills and upgrade costs.

The ships were supposed to be used as test vessels for the continued standing up of the LCS class, but LCS 1 through 4 have just about reached the end of their usefulness as test vessels and are no longer worth a deeper financial investment, according to a February briefing by Rear Adm. Randy Crites, the deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for budget."

IMO none of these "transformational" ships are worth much as combat capable WARships, based on open source info....... :x OTOH, they all keep costing we taxpayers as more are building. DFO

Two shots of the "transformational" G. GIFFORD LC$ in SCS with 4 chicomm ships, including a Type 054A FFG. Sort of like ABDA vs IJN in early '42 for combat capability...... :o DFO
