Poland Creates a New Island

Unread post by greendragon »

It has been for many years and finally started couple of years ago with the "cut" or channel between Baltic sea and the Vistuls Lagoon.
With the cost of about 500 000 Pounds Poland is due to open a shortcut to one of its small local portof Elblag located inside the Lagoon.
It will make shorter trip from West and hopes are to make the region "revitalized" by avoiding lengthy trip around the whole Vistula Spit.
Additional advantage is to get rid of the Russians who were notorious of interfere with free passage to the Lagoon across the straits of Balrijsk/Primorie of ships of all sorts claiming that is a military area.
The channel of some 900m long is built with modern technologies , rotating bridge to the rest of the Spit, passages for animals as well as an artificial but built from the bottom materials island for sea birds in the middle of the lagoon.
The plan is to officially have it opened on the 17SEP this year - the date of the 1939 Soviet invasion on Poland.

On the 17th of SEP which is the anniversary of the Soviet Russia invasion in 1939 on Eastern part of Poland which was an aftermath of the Ribentrop&Molotov treaty from August 1939 the locks and channel was officially opened - the sea way to Polish part of the lagoon and main small port Elblag.
There are some fights between parties as this is based on any sufficiently strong economics pedestals but certainly the important gain is no more begging Russia for entering to lagoon through Pilawa straits and no longer being depended on their bad will.
On small scale a freedom of seas and movement has been granted today.
The channel and locks allow today small ships of come 1000DWT and up to 8-10 ft draft but is soon to be opened for ships of up to 18ft draft and 3000 (5000?) DWT size when channel to Elblag will be deepened.

Should be added that in German times (before 1945) the channel (although via Pillau strait) was kept 15 ft deep and allowed ships of some 15ft draught underway .
The whole area used to be part of Germany called Eastern Prussia separated from their main land Germany by Poland. The Nazis then in power demanded a "corridor" across Poland to eastern Prussia which Poland of course refused and it became one of the main official reasons of the Nazi Germany assault on Poland on 01SEP 1939.

The whole infrastructure of the locks has been very nicely designed and would be no doubt a touristic attraction.

The material taken from the works and bottom has been formed in a specially designed island which will be home for lots of sea birds and other creatures.
