High Frequency Direction Finder

Unread post by greendragon »

Known as Hf-DF was one of the most important dvices of the Atlantic war.
There was a complex of factors that finally defeated U-boat threat and "Huf-Duf" among them.
There are many reports of how u-boats were detected by the HF-DF and escorters were able to spoil their attacks before it was started and/or sink them.
I was watching a documentary in Polish historical channel about the device and the leading role of a Polish engineer in designing and development of it.
It was one of the best documentaries because of the facts professionally presented - not popular pseudo-historical pulp forignorants.
Wiki gives a good description of history of the HF direction finder development so no need for rewriting the text but from my national prospective I watched with interest that during WW2 the finder construction was carried on under direction of Polish engineer Waclaw Struszynski (do not try to verbal his family name without a medical help on hand).
He was working on the subject before WW2 in Poland, brought all his knowledge to the UK and was working for victory under Admirality Signal Establishment.

One of the information really surprised me (and I hope you).
It was said that that Eng Struszynski inventions which were world wide licensed were officially recognized by the German Licence Office (whatever the name was) during WW2.
Astonishing.
