Destroyers: Kaba Class

Kaba Class Destroyer Kaede pictured on launch day at Maizuru Naval Arsenal on February 20th 1915.During World War I she patrolled the area around Singapore. In 1917, she became part of the newly formed 2nd Special Squadron's 10th Destroyer Flotilla. The squadron sailed out of Singapore, making port calls at Colombo, Aden and Port Said, before arriving at Malta on April 16th. She was then tasked escorting Allied convoys in the Mediterranean Sea. She was stricken from the navy list in November 1931, decommissioned on April 1st 1932 and subsequently broken up.

Kaba Class Destoyer Sakaki pictured moored at Sasebo Naval Arsenal on May 7th 1915. Sakaki was launched on February 15th 1915 at Sasebo Naval Arsenal and completed on March 26th. During World War I she patrolled the area around Singapore and later served as a convoy escort in the Mediterranean Sea.
Sakaki was torpedoed by the Austro-Hungarian Submarine U-27 on June 11th 1917 in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Crete with the loss of 68 of her 92 ratings, including her commander. She was salvaged and repaired. The Japanese Naval Memorial at Kalkara Naval Cemetery in Malta commemorates the casualties of the attack. Sakaki was stricken from the navy list in November 1931, decommissioned on April 1st 1932 and subsequently broken up.
