PWLS is likely to embark units from Commando Helicopter Force (Merlin HC4 and Wildcat AH1) and Chinooks. The exercise will be the largest Arctic exercise since the start of the Cold War. RN units are likely to include HMS Albion, HMS Defender, HMS Northumberland and RFA Mounts Bay. Fellow allied units are likely to be Norwegian warships, SNMG1, HNLMS Rotterdam and HNLMS Karel Doorman amongst others. EXERCISE COLD RESPONSE

HMS Albion sails for the fjords ahead of NATO’s Arctic exercises

The UK’s amphibious flagship today left Plymouth bound for the fjords to play a key role in the largest military exercise in Norway in more than 30 years.
HMS Albion heads for the Arctic as the spearhead of amphibious/commando forces taking part in Exercise Cold Response – a month-long test by land, sea and air of allied forces to operate in one of the most challenging environment on the planet.

Albion prepared for her Arctic mission with intensive operational training in and around Plymouth which culminated earlier this month in a joint disaster relief/civilian evacuation test, working side-by-side with the Dutch Navy’s HNLMS Karel Doorman.

HMS Albion is embarking a staff to direct amphibious operations, the headquarters of 3 Commando Brigade and Royal Marines packing Albion “absolutely up to the gunnels” from her usual 340 souls to around 1,000 at the height of Cold Response.

Alongside landing support ship RFA Mounts Bay, Albion leads the UK’s amphibious input into Cold Response, with “a significant level” of littoral strike operations – traditional-style commando raids – staged in the fjords, with the British force integrating with numerous allies, including the US, Norwegians, French, Germans and Italians.

“The UK has long had a very specific roll up in the high north in the Arctic. And it's all part of our routine development of that capability,” said Captain Simon Kelly, HMS Albion’s Commanding Officer.

“Our ability to plug into and integrate into larger task groups is absolutely the core of all our capabilities, and it's that integration into the bigger piece of NATO, that collective ability which really brings the fighting edge to NATO.”

The climate and geography of northern Norway – temperatures regularly down to -30 Celsius, ice, snow, low cloud, frozen lakes, narrow fjords, mountains and valleys – all add to the complexity of amphibious operations which are generally regarded as the most difficult to perfect.

Captain Kelly continued: “We're going to Norway at the most challenging time of year. Winter, it will be dark for a long period of the day. And so what we're trying to do is ensure that we can operate in all environments.

“For every sailor from the newest all the way up to myself, we have to understand that the environment is incredibly harsh. It's a matter of mindset and it's a matter of having the right kit on board to make sure we're all safe.

“As a ship we go up and train in that area very regularly, but for some of the young sailors on board, this will be their first time operating in the Arctic and it'll be the first time seeing something like the Northern Lights.”

For Cold Response, HMS Albion will be joined by RFA Mounts Bay at the core of the amphibious force, while HMS Prince of Wales takes past as NATO command ship leading a task group including HMS Richmond, HMS Defender, tanker RFA Tidesurge and US Navy destroyer USS Roosevelt.

HMS Albion will lead the UK's amphibious involvement in the Norwegian-led exercise - through March into April. It involves 35,000 troops from 28 nations, with allied warships and aircraft working closely together as the powerful task force tests its ability to protect Norway from modern threats.

Royal Marines carry out fjord recce mission as huge Arctic exercises with NATO allies take shape

Royal Marines emerged from the freezing depths of an Arctic fjord during final preparations for the largest winter exercise in Norway for 30 years.
Expert teams from 30 Commando Information Exploitation Group swam ashore and used inflatable raiding boats, before studying their surroundings to carefully calculate the best place for troops to land and hit an adversary decisively.

The commandos carried out this essential training in northern Norway to ensure that amphibious forces are able to access the rugged Arctic coastline when the Norwegian-led Exercise Cold Response begins in earnest next week alongside a galvanised NATO effort for peace and stability in Europe.

Around 35,000 troops from 28 nations are expected to be involved in Cold Response, which will show how a unified multilateral force would defend Norway and Europe’s northern flank from a modern adversary.

Roughly 900 Royal Marines will spearhead the UK involvement, raiding along the rugged Norwegian coastline from an amphibious task group led by HMS Albion.

Aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales will deploy to the exercise, with frigate HMS Richmond, Type 45 destroyer HMS Defender, a Royal Fleet Auxiliary tanker and a nuclear-powered attack submarine escorting her.

UK Merlin and Wildcat helicopters will patrol the skies, supporting commando operations and hunting submarines alongside a wide range of aircraft from across NATO, including F-35 fighter jets and attack helicopters.

HMS Prince of Wales departs Portsmouth to lead NATO task force in the Arctic

The UK’s largest warship has left Portsmouth to lead a NATO task force to the Arctic for the biggest exercises in Norway for 30 years.
Aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales deploys in her role as NATO’s command ship to Exercise Cold Response, the large-scale Norwegian-led exercises which will see 35,000 troops from 28 nations operate together in the harshest environment.

Prince of Wales is responsible for leading NATO’s Maritime High Readiness Force – an international task group formed to deal with major global events – and deploys for the first time in that role to Cold Response.

Aboard the carrier are the most senior sea-going staff in the Royal Navy – Commander UK Strike Force, headed by Rear Admiral Mike Utley, who will lead a sizeable task force as part of a galvanized NATO effort for peace and stability in Europe.
