Hmmm; I'm sure that the purpose of deep drop bridge windows is not to facilitate an ad-hoc seating feature for bridge watch standers (or goofers) ... nope it was to provide a near vertical view through the meshed bridge window catwalk - down to the deck below (or outboard in the case of the port/stbd deep drop bridge windows.

TIDESPRING

A136 Tidespring has today emerged from her prolonged initial inspection and refit including a capability insertion with the fitting of her 2 Phalanx CIWS which are the standard for the Tide Fast Refueler class. The Tweet link below has 4 good pics showing A136 being brought out of harbour for the first time in 9 months.

Tidespring's prolonged time at Camel Laird's (who have the standing contract for most RFA refits) was a result of some significant first of class build issues that were identified during the acceptance and sea trials processes and were scheduled for rectification during the first refit. They have proven more troublesome to sort than anticipated in addition to C.L.'s having its own resource issues at present.

A136 is the first of the 4 Tide class, so essential for QE carrier class on-deployment refuelling is also the first to have the CIWS fitted. In addition to its own self-defence it will provide additional coverage for the relevant QE carrier it is supporting.

RFA Tiderace is due to begin sea trials, once again after a refit at Cammell Laird Shipyards,Merseyside. There has been additional work to rectify problems with Tidespring’s original construction, including a vibration issue with her uptakes and funnels. In November 2018 the UK Defence Journal reported a series of build faults with the ship including firemain valves, engine mounts and cracks in her funnel.

How time flies!

NEW TRAINING FACILITY OPENS AT HMS RALEIGH
24 September 2014
A new state-of-the art facility has been opened at HMS Raleigh today (Wednesday 24 September) to begin a new era in training.

The facility, will teach sailors how to transfer stores and munitions from ship-to-ship at sea, during operations known as replenishment-at-sea (RAS). Rear Admiral Ben Key, Flag Officer Sea Training, unveiled the plaque to open the facility.

The new equipment, which replaces HMS Raleigh’s existing trainer, consists of a steel structure to replicate a Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) vessel.

Across a divide of 55 metres are three structures which mimic the reception points for transferred stores on a Type 23 frigate, a Type 45 destroyer and the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers.

It will be used to train Royal Navy and RFA personnel to carry out this complex seamanship task. International navies will also use the facility while undergoing training in Plymouth with Flag Officer Sea Training.

As ever, thanks for detailed reports and updates, various, Harry.
