Unique Submarine HNLMS K-1

Unread post by Brian James »

Unique Dutch Submarine HNLMS K-1 pictured at Vlissingen on January 1st 1914...She was ordered on October 19th 1910 by the Ministry for Colonies. On September 16th 1911 K-1 was laid down at De Schelde Shipyards, Vlissingen, she was launched on May 20th 1913. On July 15th 1914 she was commissioned into the Dutch Navy. She was specially designed for service in the Dutch East Indies, and for operating service in tropical weather. In order to counter the tropical heat, the vulnerable batteries had a large cooling system on board. Later on, an ingenious crew member connected the cooling installation to the ventilation system, which meant that K-1 had an air conditioning system, before it was officially invented. On September 12th 1916 K-1 began her journey to the Dutch East Indies theater of operations. For most of the journey she was towed by the tugboat Witte Zee. The route they took paused at Vigo, Malta, Suez Canal, Aden and Colombo arriving at Sabang on November 6th 1916. From Sabang to Batavia K-1 was escorted by the Coastal Defence Ship HNLMS Koningin Regentes. She was decommissioned in 1928.
