Reported by India Today
As many as 55 Chinese sailors are feared dead when their nuclear submarine became entangled in a trap designed for foreign vessels in the Yellow Sea, the Mirror reported.

According to a confidential UK intelligence report, the submarine encountered a "chain and anchor" trap meant for Western sub-surface vessels. The submariners died due to a catastrophic malfunction in the submarine's oxygen systems, resulting in the poisoning of the entire crew.
Among the deceased are the captain of the Chinese PLA Navy submarine '093-417' and 21 other officers.

China has officially denied the occurrence of the incident. It also reportedly declined international assistance for the stranded submarine, which had been in service for less than 15 years.
The UK report details the fatal mission: "On August 21st, an onboard accident occurred during a mission in the Yellow Sea at 08:12 local time, resulting in the loss of 55 crew members, including 22 officers, 7 officer cadets, 9 petty officers, and 17 sailors. Among the deceased was Captain Colonel Xue Yong-Peng.

"It is believed that their deaths were caused by hypoxia resulting from a system failure on the submarine. The submarine collided with a chain and anchor obstacle used by the Chinese Navy to trap US and allied submarines, leading to system failures that took six hours to repair and bring the vessel to the surface. The onboard oxygen system malfunctioned catastrophically."

There is no independent confirmation of the Chinese submarine's suspected loss in the public domain. Beijing has dismissed speculations about the incident as entirely false, and Taiwan has also denied internet reports. The UK report is highly classified and based on defense intelligence.

Possible Fatal Accident Aboard Chinese Navy Nuclear Submarine

Since August 22 there have been persistent rumors that a Chinese Navy (PLAN) nuclear submarine experienced a serious accident. They were first widely circulated on certain Chinese language social media. It has since been reported in Taiwanese media and there has been much wild speculation. However the rumor hasn't gone away, notably in Chinese sources.

Unfortunately I played an unintended role in this. The noise reached a level on August 22 that I tweeted about it in the hope of bringing more information to the surface. My tweet contained clear caveats. Despite this it was picked up by Taiwanese and other non-English language press and misrepresented to 'prove' that the incident occurred. It became a news story for a few days.

These rumors are still unconfirmed and should not be treated as fact. However, in case other information subsequently comes to light, it is worth recording them for reference. Where there is smoke, sometimes there is fire.

China 'believes UK spies bugged sailor's watch' in ship that got caught in own trap

Chinese officials reportedly believe that British spies 'planted a bug' on one of their sailors to learn about a submarine which fell victim to one of their own traps.

55 Chinese sailors are feared to be dead after one of their nuclear submarines suffered a 'catastrophic failure' in the Yellow Sea, reports claim.

The submarine supposedly got trapped after it hit a chain and anchor set up by the Chinese Navy to trap submarines from the US and UK in the waters off Shandong Province.

A UK report into the alleged disaster indicates that the submarine hit the trap on 21 August at around 8:12am local time, with 55 people dying of hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the body) after 'a system fault on the submarine'.

The report indicates that the fault occurred because the submarine hit the trap and the vessel's oxygen system then poisoned the crew.
