A Type C IJNS escort suffers a direct hit from a low flying North American B-25 Mitchell Bomber, Ormoc Bay, Philippines. The Battle of Ormoc Bay took place over several days and was a subset of the overall Leyte Gulf battles, Nov-Dec, 1944.

Semi-Dreadnought Battleship IJNS Satsuma pictured in 1919.She was laid down at Yokosuka Naval Arsenal on May 15th 1905 and was launched on November 15th 1906 with Emperor Meiji, the Navy Minister, and other high officials on hand for the ceremony, and completed on March 25th 1910.At the time of her launching, she had the largest displacement of any battleship in the world.
On August 5th 1911, she suffered an explosion in one of her 12-inch guns when it failed to fire during gunnery practice. After some time passed, the breech was opened and ignited the propellant; the resulting fire killed 16 crewmen and several officers.
She was lightly damaged by a typhoon on September 22nd 1912.She was assigned to the 1st Battleship Squadron when World War I began in August 1914.She served as Rear Admiral Tatsuo Matsumura's flagship in the Second South Seas Squadron as it seized the German possessions of the Caroline and the Palau Islands in October 1914.
She rejoined the 1st Battleship Squadron in 1915, was refitted at Sasebo Naval Arsenal in 1916 and served with the 1st Squadron for the rest of the war.Sometime during the war, she was fitted with two 12-pounders on high-angle mounts to serve as Anti-Aircraft guns.
She was disarmed at Yokosuka Naval Arsenal in 1922 to comply with the provisions of the Washington Naval Treaty, stricken from the Navy List on September 20th 1923 and converted into a Target Ship. She was sunk by the Battleships Mutsu and Nagato off the southern tip of the Bōsō Peninsula, near the mouth of Tokyo Bay on September 7th 1924

All the damage was done by USN "airdales" off of carriers. They HAMMERED the remains of the IJN with several HUGE air attacks during July, '45 timespan. They made semi-submersibles out of the majority of remaining IJN big ships. DFO

As we said in the CORPS: "don't get mad, get even". My best instructor in College was a MARINE, too.......WW2, South Pacific vintage. He is gone now but I rather suspect he would have approved of these pics, had he known.

OTOH I well remember the Japanese Army Det. at Redstone Arsenal in 1965-66; they did not mess around if any of their troops got "low" grades on the weekly tests. More "inspiration" was DRUMMED/THUMPED into such troopers after Friday classes. Even we lil, young MARINES were impressed by their discipline despite not being long out of boot camp where the D.I.s would......uhhh.......... DFO

Protected Cruiser Suzuya (Ex Novik) pictured at Kure in 1908.Built at Schichau-Werke Engineering & Shipbuilding Shipyard at Elbing (now in Poland) and commissioned in 1901.The Imperial Japanese Navy had been impressed with the speed of Novik, and despite the considerable damage inflicted during the Battle of Korsakov (and the damage created by its own crew in attempting to scuttle the vessel), sent an engineering crew to salvage the vessel as a prize of war in August 1905. The operation took almost a year to accomplish. The wreck was repaired at Yokosuka Naval Arsenal, and commissioned into the Imperial Japanese Navy as Suzuya on August 20th 1906.
