Coastal Defence Ships

Unread post by Brian James »

HNLMS Jacob van Heemskerck pictured in 1930....She was a unique 'Pantserschip' (Coastal Defence Ship) of the Royal Netherlands Navy built at Rijkswerf Shipyards in Amsterdam in 1906. She was among the ships send to patrol the Venezuelan coast during the second Castro crisis. After her active career she was rebuilt into a Stationary Battery Ship and renamed Batterijschip IJmuiden and recommissioned on April 19th 1939. She was stationed in IJmuiden. During the German invasion in World War II on May 14th 1940 she was scuttled by her crew to prevent her being captured by the German forces.
The Germans however raised the ship on July 16th 1940 and towed her to Amsterdam on July 24th. From there she was towed to Kiel in March 1941. There she was rebuilt into a floating Anti-Aircraft Battery at the Howaldtswerke Shipyards and renamed Undine. After the war she was found back in Wilhelmshafen and returned to the Netherlands.
Back at her original 'birthplace' at Rijkswerf Shipyards in Amsterdam she was rebuilt into an Accommodation Ship. She was recommissioned on February 23rd 1948 and renamed HNLMS Neptunus. This role she fulfilled until her decommissioning on September 13th 1974. On October 4th that same year she was stricken.

Koningin Regentes Class Coastal Defence Ship HNLMS Hertog Hendrik pictured in 1918.
She was built at the Rijkswerf Shipyards in Amsterdam in 1902. She was the first ship in the Dutch navy to be equipped with wireless communication. She took part in two expeditions to South Celebes and during the Spanish Civil War she performed convoy duties. During World War II she was captured by the invading German forces and converted into an Anti-Aircraft Battery. After the war the ship was recovered and given back to the Netherlands, to be converted into an Accommodation Ship. Two 9.4 in single turret guns provided the ship's main armament, and these were augmented by four single 5.9 in guns and eight 3 in single mount guns, with three 18 in torpedo mounts.

Coastal Defence Ship HNLMS De Zeven Provincien pictured in 1928.She was a small Cruiser-sized warship that sacrificed speed and range for armor and armament.Built at Rijkswerf Shipyards,Amsterdam in 1908 and commissioned on October 6th 1910.She served part of her career in the Dutch East Indies, from 1911 to 1918 and from 1921 onwards. During the 1920s, her crew included the future Rear Admiral Karel Doorman. She was renamed Soerabaja in 1936.
On February 18th 1942 in Surabaya Harbour, she was sunk by Japanese Mitsubishi G4M bombers, unlike most other Dutch ships sunk in February and March 1942 far from shore, HNLMS Soerabaja lay in shallow enough waters that the Japanese, once they were in control, were able to salvage and raise her up. In Japanese service she was used as a Battery Ship. In the following year, 1943, she was hit by Allied aerial bombardment and sank to the bottom, this time permanently.

Appears to be the jib of a crane atop that lattice framework Ivor.

Magnify the image in this linked Alamy image and IMO it is a crane jib ... the hook block/pulley seemingly close to the lattice base and possibly with chains hanging from the hook.
