Carriers sail together as HMS Queen Elizabeth and Carrier Strike Group complete final exercise
20 May 2021
Twenty warships, three submarines and 150 aircraft have taken part in a UK-led multinational exercise to test the UK Carrier Strike Group’s response to a range of crisis and conflict situations.

Designed to push the Carrier Strike Group to the limits and ensure its readiness for any situation during this year’s seven-month global deployment, Exercise Strike Warrior provided the largest and most demanding assessment it has faced so far.

Ships, personnel and aircraft from 10 nations took part in the exercise off the coast of north-west Scotland, which saw them deploy a range of advanced threats against the group.

HMS Queen Elizabeth's state-of-the-art F-35 fighter jets conducted missile firings during the exercise, marking the first time British jets have done so at sea for 15 years.

And following the exercise, the UK’s two aircraft carriers - HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales - were able to meet each other at sea for the very first time.

Photo essay – 10 hectic days for the Royal Navy’s carrier strike group

Between the 18th and 28th May, the carrier strike group completed exercise Strike warrior, saw the first meeting of two aircraft carriers at sea, returned to port, hosted visits from the Prime minister and the Queen, re-stored and refuelled, sailed and took centre stage in NATO’s largest exercise of the year.

The long-awaited PHOTEX of the two carriers finally took place off the South coast on 19th May. HMS Prince of Wales has been conducting Operational Sea Training as she re-generates after a lengthy period alongside while HMS Queen Elizabeth was heading back toward Portsmouth after exercise Strike Warrior.
