Excellent and noteworthy post Harry , you must have been torn as to where to post this as it covers many topics both sides of the pond ;)

I have pondered for the last two days on this one Ivor; but believe that since the preponderance of variations highlighted are in fact Aerials and/or Arrays (even the CIWS mountings are integral with radar) ... that left only the hawse pipe really as an oddity in this thread.

Some supporting material to follow soon.

The Trifecta!
#USSGravely, #USSCarney, & #USSPorter moor along side one another in Faslane, #Scotland. Gravely is underway as flagship of Standing #NATO Maritime Group 1 to conduct maritime operations & provide a continuous maritime capability for @NATO in the northern Atlantic.

--------------------------------

USS Gravely (DDG-107) Flight IIA; USS Carney (DDG-64) Flight I; USS Porter (DDG-78) Flight II; Moored alongside each other at Faslane.

That snapshot in time (above) provides an ideal opportunity to highlight observations of some of the variations/differences that are clearly apparent when viewing the image.

Anchor hawse pipe

15. USS Gravely; this ship appears to have reinforced shape on/around the stem aperature of hawse pipe on the bow, unlike those of the other two ships.

My claim made regarding the apparent reinforcing appears to be unfounded  , see:-

USS Porter

Perhaps not so pronounced as on USS Gravely but the feature is there on both ships shown above

Legend

Upper port and stbd yardarms

1. USS Carney; this cylindrical shaped antenna array is not on the other two ships
2. USS Gravely; this appendage is different to those installed on the other two ships
3. USS Gravely; these planar arrays (x4) are absent from the other two ships
4. USS Gravely; this appendage is not apparent in this location on the other two ships
5. USS Gravely; this small dome differs from that on the other two ships in not being mounted atop a square box shaped appendage

USS Gravely FFG-107 has form (history) Mast or Antenna - Antenna or Mast regarding broken/detatched antenna arrays ;) ... hopefully they know that that the inverted tapered cube (truncated square pyramid) element of this array is not under the dome!!!

Legend

Lower port and stbd yardarms

6. USS Gravely; these two arrays have a centre stub that is differently configured to those on the other two ships
7. USS Gravely; this appendage differs from those in the same location on the other two ships vis:- it has a dome attached unlike that on USS Porter (outboard ship); whilst the appendage on USS Carney is of an entirely different configuration
8. USS Carney; (see comments at 7. above)
9. USS Porter; (see comments at 7. & 8. above) the appendage differs in that it is without the domed extension attached
10. USS Porter; this appendage does not appear to be installed on the other two ships (in this position)

Further to observations made at 6. above (now bolded) a search has revealed some info about the antenna array and that the 'stub' is at the base of a sonic anemometer mounted atop the antenna array. This is an Array Dipole and is described thus:-

Array Dipole

The array dipole antenna is designed for use in the 225-400 MHZ UHF range. It has a power rating of 2000 watts peak envelope power, with a VSWR not greater than 1.8:1. See figure 2-29.

The array consists of four broadband radiating dipole elements mounted an equal distance from each other and the mounting structure. It is fed from a single coaxial input and divided by an integral coaxial line matching transformer and feed line sections. All major supporting and radiating components are aluminum. It is designed to be mounted around masts of four to ten inches in diameter.
