Invincible class aircraft carrier ILLUSTRIOUS fitting out at Swan Hunter shipyard on May 18, 1982.

The yard workers pulled out all the stops to send the ship off to the Falklands ASAP.
She left the yard 3 months ahead of schedule but arrived in the South Atlantic after the Argentine surrender.

SHOCK TRIALS

HMS Invincible (R05) undergoing first-of-class shock trials in The Solent between April 7 and 18, 1986. Charges were detonated near the ship to evaluate the effect of explosions on her machinery.

Soon after this, she went into Devonport for a major refit to bring her up to the standard of Ark Royal where she received a 12-degree ski-jump, Goalkeeper CIWS, and enhanced command and control facilities.
