Uruguayan Navy

Unread post by Brian James »

Uruguayan Navy,Protected Cruiser ROU Montevideo pictured in 1917.She was a unique one of Class built for the Italian Regia Marina by Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth Shipyards at Elswick in 1885. Notably, she was the first warship equipped with triple-expansion engines. She was originally ordered by the Hellenic Navy and named Salamis, but she was sold to the Italians before she was completed and renamed RM Dogali. She was armed with a main battery of six 5.9 inch guns and reached a speed of 19.66 knots on her sea trials, making her one of the fastest Cruisers at the time.
Dogali's career was uneventful; she served with the main Italian fleet for the first few years of her career and visited the United States in 1893 for the start of the World's Columbian Exposition. In January 1908, she was sold to Uruguay and renamed 25 de Agosto and later Montevideo, she was not disposed of until 1932 when she was sold for scrap.
