Good that's a result!
The four of our ships in 1st DS (Battle Class) used to have competitions between them when in Gib and down the Gut in Malta.

Can someone tell me if the traditional " Main engines, steering gear & siren, tested & ready for sea , Sir" report to the Captain by the ship's MEO is still carried out today?

The Green Empire did the same routine called "Sea Comms" when all Navigation Lights, Radar, etc was tested/flashed up, reading for leaving harbour one hour before sailing and the WEO reported to the bridge. I will be surprised if has been discontinued.

1045. Propulsion Controls, Steering Gear, Engine Order Telegraphs, Sirens and Navigation Lights
1. Before getting under way the propulsion controls, steering gear, engine ordertelegraphs, emergency communications, sirens, emergency / salvage equipment, navigationlights, davits and capstans are to be tested and proved fully functional by the Marine EngineerOfficer, or other officer or responsible engineering rating nominated by them. The MarineEngineer Officer or their representative is to satisfy themselves, by actually working thesteering gear, telegraphs and sirens, that they are free from obstruction and in good workingorder.
2. The report that the propulsion controls, steering gear, telegraphs, navigation lights andsirens are correct is to be made by the Marine Engineer Officer to the Commanding Officer atthe same time as the propulsion machinery is reported ready for sea in accordance with BRd3000.

Thanks for the reminder of the exact wording, Harry. It's many years ago since I carried out the ritual. Incidentally my Captain always called me "Chief" when I was the MEO, hangover from the MN I expect.

I have an anniversary coming up on the 25th Oct. It's 70 years since I signed on for Special Service in the rating of Junior Stoker 2nd class. How time flies!
