Re: RN other topics
I am confused by the new branches & their responsibilities. I understand the old Stoker, Stoker Mechanic, Marine Engineering Mechanic have all changed. Does the ME branch now have responsibilities for electrics etc., like the Merchant Navy, if so do they get their training at Sultan? Incidentally I was in the first class Of Mechanician candidates who occupied HMS Siskin FAA base, which became Sultan in 1956.

Re: RN other topics
When you initially posted the above, I had a look around the RN websites in an attempt to get the most comprehensive layout that would provide you with some/most of your answers in one hit. But as so often with the 'RN machine', that has not been a simple task. BR 3d is always a fall back doc but is more than a tad cumbersome to navigate.... so in an attempt to give you some answers I include the following from royalnavy.mod.uk Specialisms :-oldsalt wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2019 6:43 pm I am confused by the new branches & their responsibilities. Without you, the Royal Navy is going nowhere

Whilst what will be found by opening the link and working through some of the headings above is not a complete answer to your question - it does give a flavour and allows for more time to pull up a better answer for you.
In the meantime I hope it is of some help to you Keith.

Thanks little h, it made interesting reading but there were huge gaps. One thing really stood out, the present pay scales. In 1919 the daily rate for an AB was 4shillings/day, in 49 when I joined in October the rate was still 4/-. In Dec. 49 the rate doubled to 8/- a day.

Not sure where to post these items so I thought keep them in the branch. Pity card No 3 is missing. I think the date of these is pre WW1.

Where is everyone? How many of us are left? I am just coming up to my 88th birthday & am beginning to feel like a sole survivor. I feel so disconnected from this time, I feel like an alien. From the woke brigade & the idiot response to the Bug, believing all domestic electrical needs can be supplied by wind power etc. etc. Have they all gone mad! The knee bending footballers will soon stop when spectators start booing the pointless, look at me, futile gestures. It seems that all common sense has evaporated & been condensed into smart phones, more like idiotic lumps of junk. I feel a little better now, but not much.

You may feel alone Keith but I can assure you...... you are not mate ,[and I'm fourteen years your junior dear Sir . so take some solace from the fact that age is not a governing factor in this case .]
We are All still here Keith , just a tad preoccupied with other non- sensical actions and debating the lack of common sense in others whom we put in place... and their opposition... who have convinced themselves that "they" know better- but are frustrated that no one agrees with them
We all agree that the idiots who ignored the first "lock down" and are now demanding that we need another one [ thats a lock down... not a three month paid holiday again ] in the face of localised " lock down" .. which unfortunately.. we are unable to finance ......so the chance seems to have passed us by. fuelled by common ignorance of the facts glaring them in the face and the realisation that the uk has no bottomless pit of funds as we no longer have an Empire to put up as collateral for the Trillion £ loans it will all cost and be paid back ......[.dosen't bowed well for the defence budget does it ]
Add to this the ever increasing flow of other "Immigrants" fighting for their " Rights " that the human traffickers assured them they would get whilst they paid over their charges ......which we then confirmed by sticking them in ***** hotels whilst they prove their individual cases for being accepted
"We" are being sacrificed by those who are devoid of common sense , but being" Old Farts" we are of little consequence and expendable it seems .
So all the good we have collectively done in our country , the funds we paid up front to provide for our retirement should now be spent on them ,
After all most of us are personally responsible for Slavery , racism , bettering out lot at "THEIR" expense and so it goes. on and on. and on , whilst they are depressed , cant communicate , dont talk and are withdrawn facing mental issues
Think of these points whilst in your hammock tonight Keith ........and if you are anything like your junior White haired surfer here , respond by doing what they do to us when we request common sense and consideration The Churchill Gesture should suffice nicely

Re: RN other topics
On completion of my Mechanicians course I was issued with a tool box ( metal about 2ft x 18"x 18") it contained a large selection of tools we needed. We had to hump this box plus kit bag & hammock, a bit of a burden. I was wondering now that there are no Artificers or Mechanicians , how tools are obtained. Is there a central tool store or a workshop containing a selection of tools? The most common sized spanner used in my time was 9/16", the Engineers Store in the old Ark Royal had only one or two. The Fleet Air Arm had wheeled tool boxes each tool stored position had a painted outline of the tool, making it easy to check all tools had been replaced & not left in the aircraft. Most of us Mechs & Tiffy's had our own hand made bits & pieces eg a mandrill for fitting carbon glands. Do modern ships have a workshop & what machine tools do they have.? Does anyone know?
