In today’s Telegraph there is an obituary for an Alan Tarver GM. I remember very well when he was awarded the George Medal. He was piloting a Sea Vixen when one engine flamed out. They sent up a Scimitar to refuel him, but the second engine also flamed out. Then the observer’s ejector seat failed. So the pilot inverted the jet twice to try and shake the observer out to no avail. By this time the jet was quite low to the oggin, so much so that the pilots canopy failed to fully open and he injured his knee. Picked up by the SAR chopper. RIP Sir.
