The Overall Picture

"Russia is back, but you already knew that or you wouldn’t be here.
This article was submitted to the UK Defence Journal by Daniel May, a final year history student at the University of Bristol.
The precise details of how Russia has re-emerged are perhaps less clear, as is what it means for the rest of the world. Russian intelligence services have been in the news a lot, but what have the conventional forces been up to in the meantime, and how does it all fit together?
2007-2009 saw the Army enact major structural reforms, with the Navy following in 2013-2014 and the Air Force in 2015-2017. The MVD was reorganised as the National Guard in 2016. The core purpose of these reforms was to reduce the number of strategic commands of the armed forces.
This retasked the armed forces reduced in size from its Soviet era height, lowering costs and (in theory) cutting down on corruption. Divisions were reduced to Brigades, Naval Squadrons were amalgamated and Air Regiments were reordered as Aviation Base Commands."

The rebuild/modernization of the battlecruiser Admiral Nakimov is mentioned in the article. Work is taking place in the same "basin" that was used to rebuild India's "free" carrier, and could only start after her delayed completion.

I haven't seen any recent articles or pictures of the NAKIMOV, but from what I have seen she is definitely getting a first class make over. She probably will emerge as an extremely powerful, modern warship. Russian Navies have done this before: the oldest I am aware of is the PETYR VELIKI from the mid-late 1800s, but after a complete rebuild she survived-per some reports-until the 1950s as a hulk.

At any rate attached are some pictures of the work being done on the NAKIMOV. :) DFO

Like I mentioned, haven't seen anything new for a while. If what has been written about the overhaul is true, she will be the most powerful surface combatant afloat...short of a NIMITZ class cv. Supposedly her sister, PETRY VELIKI will follow her for a rebuild/update.

Meanwhile the Russian Navy is certainly concentrating on well armed corvettes and some FFGs. This includes the long delayed ADM. GORSHKOV, first of her class, very recently accepted into their Fleet. Several units of the ADM. GRIGOROVITCH class ffg are already shuttling between the BSF and Syria. Three different corvette classes are being built, too.

No new pics, but this was announced by the Russians:

"No modernization/upgrade plans for all the #RussianNavy cruisers:
-The upgraded Admiral Nakhimov battlecruiser will join the fleet in 2022 but Pyotr Velikiy will not be upgraded
-The modernized Marshal Ustinov joined the fleet in 2017 but Moskva and Varyag will not be modernized"

So they have decided NOT to upgrade the P. Veliki; too expensive??

OTOH, they announced this, too: Karakurt-class corvettes or Project 22800.

Russian Navy orders additional four Karakurt corvettes from Amur Shipyard ;) DFO

Russian frigate conducts cruise missile drill in Barents Sea
Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov has fired a Kalibr cruise missile at a target over a reported distance of 700km in the Barents Sea, the Russian Northern Fleet press office reported on this week.
The class is the successor of the Krivak class but unlike their Soviet-era predecessors the new ships are designed to perform multiple roles. The ships are to be able to execute long-range strikes, conduct anti-submarine warfare and to carry out escort missions.

The ADM. GORSHKOV has been undergoing tests and drills for years, but was finally taken into their Fleet not to long ago. Other units of the class are being built. At least one, ADM. KASTONOV, is in the water as well. DFO
