Russia Warship Flotilla in Asia Sparks Fears: 'Global Takeover'

Russian warships docked at Bangladesh's port of Chattogram on Sunday, Russian state-run media reported, sparking fears of growing Russian influence in South Asia.

Anti-submarine warfare ships Admiral Tributs and Admiral Panteleyev, and the tanker Pechenga, from Russia's Pacific naval fleet, docked at the key port on the Bay of Bengal, days after Myanmar and Russia kicked off their first joint naval exercise.

Has the Russian submarine threat been diminished by the Ukraine war?

Head of the US Northern Command recently told Senators that Russia could have its most powerful Yasen (NATO name Severodvinsk) class attack submarines on persistent patrols off either of America’s coasts within two years which will “reduce decision space for a national senior leader in a time of crisis”. Here we look at these boats and the wider Russian submarine threat that is equally applicable to the UK and Europe.

The broad consensus in the West is that the war in Ukraine has proven the once much-feared Russian armed forces to be hollowed out, poorly equipped and badly led. The heavy losses of Russian Army (SV) soldiers and armour, accompanied by the mediocre performance of the Air Force (VVS) is a matter of record. The sinking of the ancient cruiser Moskva and the poor performance of the Russian Navy (VMF) in the Black Sea would appear to indicate a much-diminished threat across the full spectrum of non-nuclear capabilities.

Russian Navy frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov entered Mediterranean Sea

The ship follows the cruiser Varyag, which arrived in the Mediterranean on April 1st. Russian media report that before crossing the canal, the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov made a visit to the Egyptian port of Safaga.

Both the Varyag and the Marshal Shaposhnikov are expected to operate in the Mediterranean for a short time before heading towards South America.
