David,

Take a look at this .... I cropped then enlarged the photo on the left of the second attachment you posted about the Shotley event.

Screenshot (5416).png

.... and now a shufti at the Trophy being presented to the Cardiff in this link to the WNS Ceres Class
(copyright prevents me placing it here) - scroll down to:-

The Arbuthnot Trophy for Marathon.

Won by HMS Cardiff in 1922 and 1924.

and view the trophy ... a sculped male form mounted on a plinth - left arm raised - at a lean - left leg extended straight - right knee bent ... is that a replica being presented in your pic?? ... it is certainly the trophy at the centre foreground of the middle top photo in the group.

HMS Canterbury apparently won the Cruisers' Arbuthnot marathon trophy at Shotley in October 1930, but there are no images showing ships in the background on this occasion.

A group of four images (1930 race) are up for sale on ebay (as are the earlier 1927 group of images) see the screenshot:-

Might this be what they are doing at Shotley David:-

.... An interfleet crosscountry race was called "The Arbuthnot Trophy"....

Also this bolded (by me) passage will refer to the posts I have already posted:-

He had a Sunbeam Tonneau [4] and competed with it in the 1904 Bexhill Speed Trials. An enthusiastic member of the Motor Cycling Club, he kept his motorbike in his day cabin and engaged in long distance endurance races.[5] In 1908, he came third in the single-cylinder class of the Isle of Man TT,[6] and an annual rally in the Isle of Man and a TT trophy for service members are named after him. He had been a member of the M.C.C. since 1898, and had played for the Club, United Services, and the Navy.

TU Harry, quite a lot of info once one starts digging.
All we were trying to do was confirm that the race had actually been run in the Shotley area.
"There were 400 participants in this first race, held in the Dardanelles in 1919. The Trophy was won on this occasion by the crew of the Iron-Duke Class battleship."
"It was the cross country version run at Shotley in 1926."

Can anyone provide the type/class of this MTB and the date or estimated date photo taken please?
The background fits in with Osea Island and the Blackwater.

From he who seeks the ship's name:
" Trying to ID this D Class cruiser... It's either HMS Dragon or HMS Dauntless as these were the only D class completed with a hangar for a float plane built into the bridge."

I would say the photo is of Dragon. This is a similar view of Dauntless. Note the position of the scuttles immediately aft of the port anchor and the liferaft stowage compared to Dragon.

Jim from the Bod who asked the question:
"Thanks for your comment David. I tend to think the mystery cruiser is HMS Dragon too. To be honest I cannot see any difference in the scuttles. The original photo of the unknown cruiser is below. Scuttles configuration look the same as in your oppo's Dauntless to me."
