USS Constellation was heavily damaged by fire whilst fitting out on December 19th 1960. The carrier was in the final stages of construction at Brooklyn Navy Yard. The fire broke out after a chain of events involving a forklift truck and a tank of diesel fuel. The fire burned for 17 hours and killed 50 shipyard workers. It also cost $75m and delayed completion by 7 months. Connie was finally commissioned on October 27th, 1961.
