Engineers at RNAS Culdrose save RN £12m with simple fix for Merlin helicopters

Original manufacturers manual says entire nose landing gear should be replaced after 3,500 flying hours at cost of £230k but experienced team realises just a single pinion needs changing.

Q & A For info and comment:

One of our number has mentioned an incident on Victorious when a Sea Vixen launch was cancelled at the last moment because someone was sucked into the air intake. Can anyone provide more details please? Apparently he was OK.

I was Scimitar duty officer between the cats at the time. He was definitely not OK. A tragic incident and a sad reminder to stokers not to put their hands on the intake when exiting from attaching the catapult.
It was 1961/62 890. Ark Royal.

Equality: Husband and wife @RoyalNavy officers Nick and Fran Allen met at Dartmouth BRNC, commissioned together, serve at Culdrose, take turns caring for their children (so the other can go to sea) & will now become lieutenant commanders in the autumn.

This is a painting I was asked to create titled ‘Three decades of Fleet Air Arm Service’ which has now be received as a birthday gift. It depicts the helicopters worked on by the recipient over three decades with the Fleet Air Arm Service. During this period he served onboard HMS Kent (shown in the distance) and HMS Invincible; working on the following helicopters: Sea King (Mk. 4, 5 and 6). Lynx (Mk. 3 ).

Forces TV talk to Navy Wings Seafire pilots Bill Dean and Chris Gotke and Seafire Veteran Rear Admiral Ray Rawbone.

After joining 809 NAS flying Seafires in 1943, Ray (pictured below) embarked in HMS Stalker and saw active service in the Seafire in the Atlantic, the invasion of the South of France, Italy, Greece, Burma, Sumatra and Malaya, crash landing behind enemy lines and being captured during the invasion of South of France in 1944. Awarded the AFC, he went on to command 736 NAS, 897 NAS and RNAS Yeovilton.
