NATO Submarine Rescue System relocation contract announced

The Ministry of Defence has announced the upcoming award of a contract valued at £10 million for the relocation of the NATO Submarine Rescue System (NSRS) assets.

This contract involves securing a new building for the system and ensuring it meets operational requirements.

According to the Voluntary Ex-Ante Transparency (VEAT) Notice published on 27 February 2024, “JFD Ltd acting as agent for the UK Ministry of Defence is requested to secure a lease for the relocation of the NSRS assets to a suitable commercial building.”

The contract aims to address unforeseen structural issues at the current base that have limited access and affected the contractor’s ability to maintain the NSRS’s readiness.

Navy Lookout
The submarine that returned to Falsane yesterday had been on deterrent patrol for 201 days.
The crew are to be congratulated on yet another epic feat of endurance but are we pushing people and boats too hard?

Alba Party raise concerns over extended submarine patrols

Alba Party* have called on the UK Government to scrap the Trident Nuclear weapons programme before “disaster” strikes.
Alba’s comments come as Trident-carrying submarine HMS Vengeance was spotted returning to its base on the Clyde recently, completing a patrol that lasted nearly seven months – over double the period the crews are expected to undertake.

U.S. Naval Institute
The Jolly Roger from HMS E54 will go on display at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum next month. Flown by HMS E54 in 1916, the flag is believed to be the oldest surviving one of its kind. Subs began to fly the Jolly Roger during WWI because the First Sea Lord of the British Royal Navy had stated that submarine warfare was "underhanded, unfair, and damned un-English", and that captured enemy submariners should be hanged as pirates.
