RN Survey Ships: Echo Class 2003

Unread post by Little h »

The class comprises two ships - HMS Echo (H87) & HMS Enterprise (H88)

The Royal Navy’s Echo Class hydrographic / oceanographic survey vessels (SVHOs) were introduced by Vosper Thornycroft. Appledore Shipbuilders constructed the ships in North Devon in a contractual agreement with Vosper Thornycroft. Two Echo Class ships are in service with the Royal Navy.

Two Echo Class survey ships, Echo and Enterprise, were ordered by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) under a logistics support contractor scheme. As per the agreement, Vosper Thornycroft is to provide maintenance services for both the ships throughout their intended 25-year service life.

The first ship in the class, HMS Echo (H87), was launched in March 2002. It entered into service in October 2002 for commissioning in March 2003. HMS Echo is the ninth ship in the Royal Navy to carry the name. The second vessel, HMS Enterprise (H88), was launched in April 2002. It was officially named in May 2002 and commissioned in October 2003.

HMS ENTERPRISE SUPPORTS BEIRUT AFTER PORT EXPLOSION
21 August 2020
HMS Enterprise has been in Beirut to carry out survey work of the port and deliver vital stores to the city.

The Royal Navy ship has been tasked to support the UK’s efforts following the explosion which has devastated Lebanon’s capital city.

Enterprise has spent the past couple of weeks loading stores from RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, and taking them across the Mediterranean to Beirut, including 500 canvas cots, 112 tents and five field kitchens.

Loaded up on the vessel’s quarterdeck, the supplies will be able to house and feed up to 500 soldiers from the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) who are working on the relief operation.

Also on board Enterprise were three soldiers from the British Army’s Mercian Regiment, ready to help the LAF set up the tents and field kitchens, and seven members of the Royal Marines Force Protection Team from 42 Commando.

HMS ENTERPRISE DUE HOME TOMORROW AFTER 15-MONTH DEPLOYMENT TO ASIA-PACIFIC
15 October 2020
A busy 15-month deployment is coming to an end for Royal Navy ship HMS Enterprise.

The survey ship is due to return to her Devonport base tomorrow after sailing more than 53,000 nautical miles, starting off in France, then travelling to the Asia-Pacific and back again.

Enterprise has sailed through two oceans and six seas and visited 15 different ports at 11 different countries since leaving the UK last summer.

The vessel operates a three-crew system – sailors spend three months on board before flying home to complete courses and training.

HMS Enterprise ventured closer to the North Pole than any other Royal Navy vessel in 2022, sailing within 1,000 miles of the top of the world.

The Royal Navy say here that the survey ship headed into the Arctic to update charts and scientific understanding of waters increasingly patrolled by Royal Navy warships to maintain freedom of navigation of the High North.
“After receiving specific training for the mission – which saw crew facing water and air temperatures just above freezing, even at the beginning of autumn – Enterprise made for the Barents Sea off the northern coast of Norway. Passing 66.56° North crew painted the bull ring on the bow – known as a ‘blue nose’ – a traditional seafaring ceremony to designate a ship has sailed inside the Arctic

In focus: The Royal Navy’s Echo-class survey vessels

HMS Echo and HMS Enterprise are the Royal Navy’s hydrographic oceanographic survey vessels (SVHO). Designed to survey both coastal and ocean waters, they have also proved flexible and adaptable to a variety of other roles. Here we look at the history, design and service life of these two ships.
