HMS Gannet is a Doterel screw sloop built by Sheerness Royal Dockyard in 1878. She served on the Pacific Staion in the early 1880's and later with the Mediterranean Fleet. From 1888 she was employed on surveying work and finally decommissioned in 1895.
In 1903 she became the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve training ship on the River Thames and was renamed President and President II in 1909.
In 1913 she became a training and accommodation ship on the River Hamble, retaining the name President. She served in that capacity until 1968 and was turned over to the Maritime Trust in 1987 for restoration. She is now part of the National Historic Fleet and is located at Chatham Dockyard.
