HMS Unicorn - History

Unread post by jbryce1437 »

HMS Unicorn is a Leda Class Sailing Frigate bult by Chatham Dockyard in 1824. She was never fully rigged and served as a hulk and Depot Ship and made the journey from Chatham to Dundee under tow in 1873 to serve as the reserve training ship for the River Tay. She acted as the headquarters ship for the Senior Naval Officer in Dundee during both World Wars. During the Second World War she was renamed HMS Unicorn II and, with the introduction of the Aircraft Carrier of the same name, from 1941 to 1959 she was renamed HMS Cressy.
She currently resides at Dundee and is preserved under the management of the Unicorn Preservation Society.
You can find out more about HMS Unicorn and how to plan a visit here.
She is on the National Historic Ships register.
