US F-35BS ARRIVE FOR WORK-UP WITH HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH
10 September 2020
Ten United States F-35B fighter jets have arrived in the UK ahead of joining HMS Queen Elizabeth.

The aircraft from V Marine Fighter Attack (VMFA) 211 Squadron landed at RAF Marham in Norfolk from their base in Yuma, Arizona.

The US Marine Corps Squadron will be working alongside 617 Squadron as they prepare to embark HMS Queen Elizabeth later this month for Exercise Joint Warrior.

The squadron will conduct synthetic training in the purpose-built simulators at RAF Marham to familiarise themselves with the local airspace and procedures before they take to the Norfolk skies to fly training sorties alongside 617 Squadron.

They will also be participating in Exercise Point Blank with their colleagues from RAF Lakenheath along with other NATO partners.

Once onboard HMS Queen Elizabeth both squadrons will conduct carrier qualification training to ensure all pilots are proficient to operate from the carrier during both day and night.

Training will also include live and inert weapons training ahead of Carrier Strike Group 21 (CSG21) next year which will see the carrier deploy operationally for the first time.

With the training complete the aircraft will then conduct Exercise Joint Warrior from HMS Queen Elizabeth which will bring together multiple units to train collaboratively in preparation for CSG21.

On completion of Exercise Joint Warrior both 211 and 617 Squadrons will return to RAF Marham where they will then prepare to take part in a further exercise, Crimson Warrior which will allow the F-35’s to conduct high end training, alongside other aircraft, in a contested and degraded environment with this year’s focus being on multi-domain operations.

RAF Marham Station Commander, Group Captain Jim Beck said: “It’s fantastic to welcome VMA-211 Squadron to RAF Marham for the first time and we are looking forward to working with them over the coming weeks to prepare for their deployment to HMS Queen Elizabeth.

“We are planning to undertake a qualification period and then participation in two exercises. These exercises will really put our personnel to the test to ensure that they are ready to deploy on Carrier Strike Group 21 next year and will be the opportunity to showcase the capabilities of the F-35 working alongside our NATO partners.”

NAVY HELP REMOVE ICONIC AIRCRAFT AT HOME OF F-35B STRIKE FIGHTERS
18 February 2021

ROYAL Navy aircraft recovery specialists helped to remove a Cold War-era bomber aircraft from RAF Marham in Nofolk.

Personnel from the Joint Aircraft Recovery and Transportation Squadron – JARTS – were called in to take down the Victor gate guardian aircraft, which was in a poor state.

The 35-metre long aircraft, produced by Handley Page, was a jet-engined strategic bomber, which had a crew of five and served as Britain’s nuclear deterrent until 1968. The aircraft was the third and final V-bomber to be operated by the RAF.

RAF Marham is home to the Lightning Force F-35B aircraft, which will join HMS Queen Elizabeth’s Carrier Strike Group when she deploys this year. royalnavy.mod.uk/carrierstrikegroup

Sunday Times feature on Cdr Tim Flatman, CO of 207 Squadron - F-35 Operational Conversion Unit at RAF Marham

Top Gun UK: meet the elite fighter pilots preparing for combat

Since Russia invaded Ukraine, RAF Marham has been on the highest alert. Nick Rufford meets the pilots preparing for the unthinkable

A posse of Russian jets is flying fast and low over the North Sea. The fighting in Ukraine has breached its borders and the intruders have entered Nato airspace, heading for the east coast, destination unknown. Within minutes four F-35Bs have launched, flown in a combat formation — a “four-ship” — by Britain’s elite fighter pilots. As the bandits enter UK airspace a dogfight ensues. It sounds like a Tom Clancy opener, but these skirmishes are taking place almost daily, with only one difference: the bandits aren’t Russian. They’re friendly planes piloted by trainers, role-playing as the enemy.

Since the start of the Ukraine conflict, Britain’s air bases have been on maximum alert and the hi-tech planes that provide Nato’s key defence are ready to scramble at a moment’s notice, 24 hours a day. On the front line is RAF Marham in Norfolk. Surrounded by wheat and potato fields, the former Second World War bomber station doesn’t seem all that imposing. The airfield’s runways, taxiways and hangars sprawl over more than 1,600 acres, but they are built into a dip and the curved-roof aircraft sheds are grass-covered, making them almost invisible. Blink as you drive through farmland along the A1122 and you’ll miss it. But modern combat is all about air superiority. Marham is the closest British base to the fighting. From here to the Belarusian border it’s just 55 minutes by fast jet. Once you’re past Marham’s guardhouse and through the high perimeter fence you’re in the world of fast jets, buzz cuts and flying suits. This is where the “best of the best” pilots come to prepare for aerial combat.
