China’s ‘Most Advanced’ Aircraft Carrier, Fujian, To Begin Sea Trials This Year; Aims To Challenge US Navy’s Dominance

Fujian, China’s third and most technologically advanced aircraft carrier, is anticipated to begin sea trials this year, expanding its advanced naval fleet to rival the US Navy.

The Fujian is China’s largest and most sophisticated warship to date. It represents a crucial step in Xi’s plan to upgrade the military and close the military technology gap with the US.

The ship’s vice-captain announced the sea trails in a video message released on December 3. Qian Shumin said that China must take charge of all the sea trials-related work in the coming year and help the military achieve its [Two Centenaries] goals.

China hopes to achieve the second aspect of President Xi Jinping’s “Two Centenaries” ambitions to put the country at the forefront of global powers by 2049 when it celebrates its centenary.

The ship was launched in June and is currently being geared up at the Jiangnan Shipyard near Shanghai. Simultaneous mooring trials were started in September to shorten the delivery period.

The fit-out phase, which comes after the vessel’s launch and before sea trials, sees the ship getting ready for delivery and marks the end of construction.

One of the most recent photos of FUJIAN fitting out. Looks like she has been "rolling coal", I believe the term is among diesel pickup drivers as they purposely pollute while driving........ :o DFO

China’s 80,000 Ton ‘Super-Carrier’ Fujian Tests Electromagnetic Catapult Launch System; Becomes 2nd After The US With Such Tech – Reports

The observers are keenly waiting for the catapults, which will be the major departure from its first two carriers – the Liaoning and Shandong. The first two carriers rely on less advanced ski jump-style “short take-off, barrier arrested recovery” (STOBAR) systems.

The Fujian deploys a “catapult assisted take-off but arrested recovery” (CATOBAR) launch system. This represents a leapfrogging past more conventional steam-powered catapults.

The Fujian is much bigger than the previous Chinese aircraft carriers. As against the Liaoning’s 60,000 tonnes and the Shandong’s 66,000, the Fujian displaces roughly 80,000 tonnes.

The progress on the Fujian suggests that the PLA-Navy will be meeting its short-term goal of becoming a fully modernized military by 2027, the centennial of its founding. China’s capability to take warships from the drawing board to sea trials is congruent with its ambition to construct and deploy six advanced aircraft carrier groups by 2035. *
