HMS Warrior

Unread post by jbryce1437 »

History
The iron-clad HMS Warrior was commissioned in August 1861 and she was the largest, fastest and most heavily armoured and most heavily armed warship in the world at 9,210 tons. In time, as other navies progressed and caught up and overtook her design and capability, she became a Coastguard and Reserve ship in 1875 and spent much of her time moored in Portland Harbour. She also spent time at Greenock and her sea going career ended in 1883 when it was found that her masts were rotten.
She became a depot ship at the torpedo training school and was renamed HMS Vernon III when another HMS Warrior entered service in the fleet. She was put up for sale in 1924 and became an oil fuel hulk at Pembroke Dock.
She was handed over to the Maritime Trust in 1979 and she was taken to Hartlepool for restoration. In 1983 ownership was transferred to the Ship's Preservation Trust, which became the Warrior Preservation Trust in 1985.
Restoration work complete, she was towed in June 1987 to Portsmouth Harbour, where she is now located and is open to the public.

HMS Warrior is a 40 gun armoured frigate, built for the Royal Navy by Thames Ironworks in 1860. She is the lead ship in the Warrior Class of Ironclads and saw service in the Channel Squadron and served as the guardship at Queenstown in Ireland and saw service with the West Indies and Meditteranean Fleets.
After becoming obsolete, she was assigned to the Torpedo School in 1904 and her name changed to HMS Vernon III. She spent fifty years as a Fuel Jetty at Pembroke Dock from 1929. She was restored at Hartlepool before being moved to Portsmouth where she can be visited. You can find more information on the HMS Warrior website here.

Thanks to Pelican, I copy his post to this thread for future information:

Evidently you can see what is going on when the camera is panning:
Discover Portsmouth from up above
From the mizzen mast of HMS Warrior comes a brand new high definition webcam that streams stunning views of Portsmouth Harbour and Gosport. After a short hiatus, the Warrior webcam makes a welcome return as you spy Royal Navy ships across the Camber and inside Portsmouth Naval Base.
The Warrior camera pans between 7am and 5pm daily in all weathers taking in the surrounding area in high fidelity.

Also handy for other comings and goings?
