Here are 3 more views of her arriving after the battle. Per a assessment of her damage in a fairly recent issue of W.I., her damages were fairly extensive and would have made a North Atlantic passage back to Germany in Winter rather problematical ...........DFO

Also, a nice pic of SPEE in the English Channel, 1939. Second a view from forecastle of her 2 dummy guns added during her single war cruise. Finally a very clear shot looking down on 1 of her 5.9" and a twin 4.1" AA. DFO

On this day in 1939 the GRAF SPEE broke off battle to take refuge from the 3 RN cruisers engaging her. Her raiding career was over! DFO

Update: Fate of Pocket Battleship Graf Spee’s Nazi Eagle Still Undecided
The Battle of the River Plate, fought in the South Atlantic in December 1939 was the first naval battle of the Second World War and ended with the scuttling of the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee. While the battle itself may have ended 84 years ago, the conflict over the fate of the 770-pound bronze eagle, holding a Nazi swastika in its talons, once mounted on the stern of the ship, continues on unabated.
