Horrendous
Black smoke rises from the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) in the aftermath of a fire that occurred while she was underway conducting air operations near Hawaii (USA) on 14 January 1969. The massive fire started when a Zuni rocket accidentally exploded under the wing of an F-4. Some of the subsequent 18 explosions were 500-lb. bombs cooking off in multiples, leaving 20-foot holes in the armored flight deck. Losses totalled 28 dead, 343 wounded, and 15 aircraft destroyed.

That brings back memories of the Forrestal a few years earlier Harry when a blastshield failed on the Catapult . Nearly finished her . Saw her after she limped into Olongapo , Philippines.

.... and of course the so called 'Beehive' structure (said to be 3 storeys high); formed of multitudinous advanced Electronic Warfare ESM/ECM antenna arrays that surmounted the box shaped superstructure (Island) subsequently removed along with the AN/SPS-32 & AN/SPS33 antenna arrays.Brian James wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2019 12:00 am USS Enterprise, showing her original SCANFAR Phased Array System,c1964.

before anyone asks, Nope; I have never tried to count them all
nor have I discovered the frequency range covered by the system

One wonders was the 'Beehive' structure - complete with all the antenna - preserved? .... if so, did it find a home in a Naval Museum somewhere in the USA? .... if not, IMO it was a perfect example of a feature that deserved to be preserved.

To read a few more posts on Enterprise (CVN-65) ESM/ECM Antenna arrays - go to the General Naval Topics section; Ships/Boats Equipment forum; Domes, Cones & Cylinder shaped sensors thread .... (and now we have Wedge shaped antenna the AN/SLQ-17).

Moving back 2 posts to Harry's lovely image of Enterprise could some knowledgeable member positively identify the jet on its own in the centre at the back facing forward please. Originally i suspected F 1-11 but that is a non starter.
