Frigate Bayern beset by fishing boats in the Indo-Pacific

The voyage of the frigate Bayern in the Indo-Pacific, which began last August and ended in January, did not go as smoothly as previously thought. Chinese fishing boats are said to have harassed the ship at times and illuminated it with searchlights. This came up today during a panel discussion at the eighth maritime colloquium of the German Maritime Institute in Wilhelmshaven. No such provocations have been communicated by the BMVg so far.

So far, it was only known that the Bavarians' original itinerary had to be corrected during the voyage, since China had ultimately rejected the planned visit of the frigate to Shanghai. At that time, the Federal Government was also extremely reticent about this matter.

The background to the presence trip to East Asia was the Indo-Pacific guidelines adopted by the federal government in 2020, which should be filled with life. The aim of the trip was to underline the validity of the existing rules of international law, in particular the right to free navigation, and to seek contact with regional partners such as Australia, Japan or South Korea. A so-called freedom of navigation operation, such as that the US Navy regularly carries out in the waters claimed by China in violation of international law, was not the presence of the Bavarians.

Previous plans of the BMVg envisage an annual presence in the Indo-Pacific from now on. The participation of the Air Force in the Australian exercise "Pitch Black" is planned for this yearESUT reported. It remains to be seen whether these plans can be implemented against the background of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the resulting change in the security situation in Europe.
