GeoSpectrum Technologies is testing it's new, self contained Towed Retractable Active Passive Sonar (TRAPS) Anti-Submarine sonar system on the Kingston-Class coastal defense ships (Royal Canadian Navy). Testing off the coast of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Kingston Class Coastal Defense ship is a 55 meter, 15 knot, radar/sonar picket vessel with a 40mm Bofars gun and port/stbd .50 caliber machine guns. It's unconventional to put a ASW sonar system on a platform with no ASW weapons.

TRAPS is a compact, low-cost active passive variable depth ASW sonar for in-service and future navy vessels. TRAPS meets the compact footprint required for small combatants and the performance required to detect submarines, torpedoes, and surface ships.

Modular, All-in-One Design
TRAPS incorporates a single tow with a Vertical Projector Array (VPA) and does not require a handling system to deploy, retrieve, and stow. This reduces footprint, weight, and price.

Multi-Mission Capability
TRAPS is ideal for littoral operations and very useful in deep water as part of a multistatic system. The modular design of TRAPS provides a variety of installation options, including containerization on multi-mission vessels and standard deck-mounting. Yep that's what I thought Jim. However (unless I've missed something :oops: ) there doesn't appear to be any mention as to the source of power for this kit. It is described as 'self contained', so an important omission IMO.

Successful Sea Trials for Atlas Elektronik’ SeaSpider Anti-Torpedo System

ATLAS ELEKTRONIK GmbH announces successful SeaSpider sea trials in cooperation with the German Bundeswehr Technical Center for ships and naval weapons, maritime technology and research (WTD 71).

The full “sensor to shooter” functional chain of a hardkill surface ship torpedo defense system with Torpedo Detection, Classification and Localisation (TDCL) and the SeaSpider Anti-Torpedo-Torpedo (ATT) has successfully been demonstrated on a surface ship.

Trials in the Baltic Sea for torpedo defence studies were conducted on a WTD 71 multipurpose vessel. These comprised the full functional chain with TDCL sonar and the third generation SeaSpider prototype with its above water launcher. At the WTD71 test range both a Mk37 torpedo derived AUV and torpedoes of the DM2A3 type served as the threats which were detected and localised with passive and active TDCL and the attendant data was used to cue the SeaSpider launch. SeaSpider acquired the threats and homed in into closest point of approach (CPA). Successful “intercept” equivalent CPA was verified by acoustic and optical means. After full evaluation of the trial results in 2018 information and pictures of the trials have now been approved for release.

Looking at other sources of information, I came across this:

TRAPS can be supplied for a permanent ship fit, and can also be housed in a 20 ft ISO container for rapid deployment on multi-mission vessels, providing flexibility and force scaling options not currently available in the market. The vertical projector array sound source produces vertical directivity which is key for optimal source directivity and rapid search.

I presume ship fit would be connected to a permanent supply on the ship and the container version would have to be some sort of plug in connection. Probably not a sausage plug or niphan plug though :-)

Another container based piece of equipment. We will need to get a fleet of container ships to store all of the containers that will enable us to undertake all of the roles that they can deliver ;-)

Diver Detection Sonar DDS

Main Features are

Automatic detection of intruders within the coverage area
Generation of early warning
Automatic target tracking
Depth classification of detected targets
Determination of target data (bearing, range, course, depth, speed etc.)
Display of processed detection and classification echoes
Display of tactical information on the surveillance display
Generation of interfaces to external communication and radar equipment
Guiding of a patrol boat to the location of the intruder
Initiating of an electronic countermeasure (low frequency/high power sources)

The Diver Detection Sonar can be installed adequate to the customer‘s requirements with following possibillitys:

The Pier Mounted Diver Detection Sonars can perform a horizontal coverage of up to 270 degrees.

The hardware of these sonar systems is housed above the waterline in a container and is thus easy to maintain. The transmitting- and receiving antennas which are mounted on a tube under water can be retraced to the surface for maintenance purposes.

The DDS node data is transferred to the Surveillance Centre either via optic fibre or, optionally, via WLAN. All data sent via WLAN can be encrypted due to military standards.

So as I understand it Harry, this bit of kit could be a prime candidate for the new line of frigate hulls which have container space should the mission dictate its need :?:
