58 Allen M Sumner class completed as DD's.

Very early in the morning of December 3rd 1944 Cooper DD695 became the unfortunate recipient of a single Jap 24" Type 93 torpedo which hit her square starboard side 'midships sending her to the bottom in less than 60 seconds. She was the last Warship sunk by this notorious weapon.

This became known as the battle of Ormoc Bay where with her sisters of DesDiv 120 Allen M Sumner DD692 and Moale DD693 she engaged some Japanese transports and two light destroyers Kuwa and Take. In the nights melee firstly Kuwa was despatched by the 3 Americans promptly followed by the Cooper.

It is still not proven beyond doubt which of the Japanese pair sank Cooper, when the wreck of Kuwa was investigated her tubes were trained and the contents empty. Take survived the war, disarmed to the UK and scrapped in 1947.
