From yesterday:

"JUNE 18, 2020

The Naval Team of our Navy returns to the sea, in these days, for important exercises that see it engaged in two sectors: to the south in the Ionian Sea , and in the Ligurian Sea , in the waters in front of the port and arsenal of La Spezia.

In detail, the second naval division came out of the port of Taranto under the orders of Admiral Paolo Pezzuti (who among other commands, including that of the Mare Safe operation, was also commander of Comsubin ), made up of several units, including the aircraft carrier Cavour , the destroyers Andrea Doria and Francesco Mimbelli and the logistic support ship Etna , with the students of the Morosini naval school in Venice on board.

The exercise, as reported in a press release from the Italian Navy, "aims to train crews for the main types of operations at sea in anti-aircraft, anti-ship and anti-submarine contexts. The activities are set according to a logic of "increasing difficulty", with the aim of putting the staff to the test in a complex and realistic environment, thus consolidating and increasing the capabilities, both individually and at the level of crews ".

Changing boards and moving to the northern one, in the Ligurian Sea a group of units under the orders of Admiral Silvio Vratogna , already in command of the Safe Sea operation and also commander of the Mine Countermeasure Forces, is exercising in the identification and neutralization of ordnance divers. The group is made up of minesweepers Alghero , Rimini and Termoli .

The maneuvers, which included aerial operations also for fixed-wing aircraft of the Navy, the AV-8B Harriers II and artillery shots, will end tomorrow, Friday 19 June . To accompany our naval units came two ships of the French Navy returning from a long activity in the Indian Ocean, which was also attended by a helicopter of the Italian Navy embarked for the occasion on the amphibious ship Mistral (L9013).

This series of important exercises is not the only activity involving naval units of our Navy: one of the main operations currently underway, called Irini , is taking place off the Libyan coast to monitor the embargo on direct and incoming weapons from Libya and to help prevent its traffic, without forgetting the aforementioned Mare Safe operation which since 2015 provides for the deployment of an air and naval device to guarantee presence, surveillance and maritime security activities in the central Mediterranean and the Strait of Sicily, in application of the legislation national and international agreements in force.

Currently, as we always read in the official Navy press release, there are 10 naval units between surface vessels and divers who see over 1300 sailors involved , including the Naval Aviation crews and the departments of the San Marco marine brigade.

A complex air-naval device which, however, if it is to be maintained in efficiency, will have to be implemented also and above all in the face of the recent sale of two of the brand new Fremm type frigates to Egypt . This type of unit, which was designed to have a multi-role vocation which, however, may become more antisom during the course of work, constitutes the backbone of our fleet: 10 of them were planned , very modern, to the point that the United States have recently decided to use the project for their FFG (X) , and now only eight will remain operational, with the hope that the two sold to the Egyptian Navy will soon be replaced by as many brand new ones.

Operations such as the latter which saw the exit of two distinct groups of naval units, one of which with the participation of a partner and ally like France , have become very important due to the changed global political scenario that sees once again the Mediterranean at the center not only of the interests of the countries of the "southern chessboard" of Europe, but also of those of powers far removed from this sea, such as Russia but also Chinawhich is slowly but steadily penetrating the Old Continent thanks to the policy of the New Silk Road. The work carried out by the Navy, namely ensuring the safety of trade routes and guaranteeing the sovereignty of the country and its interests, has become crucial in a context not only limited to national waters, but in what has been called the "enlarged Mediterranean" precisely because of the rebirth of naval politics of powers that believed themselves (naively) as out of play as Russia or geographically distant as China, without forgetting to look at the moves of "emerging regional powers" such as Turkey.

This is why it becomes fundamental that Italy recovers not only a "naval policy", therefore with more investments in the sector, but also a "naval culture".

Returning to this last exercise, the aircraft carrier Cavour was also seen at sea, which has returned to the line of the fleet after major adaptation works that will allow it to operate with the new Navy F-35Bs . Aircraft of the Stovl type (Short Take Off Vertical Landing) require the strengthening of the flight deck surface in order to withstand the very high temperatures generated by the powerful engine during the take-off and landing phases, as well as the ship needs to be adapted to receive all the tools - including IT - to be able to acquire Full Operational Capability (Foc) with the new fifth generation stealth aircraft.

Therefore Cavour ship, in the second half of this year, will route to the United States both to qualify the flight deck to the Joint Strike Fighter standards and thus to be able to embark the first Italian Navy F-35B aircraft, both to certify that the systems IT, electronics and logistic systems on board can effectively and autonomously support operations with stealth fighter-bombers."

ROYAL NAVY [FACEBOOK GROUP]

Fleet Air Arm aviator Barry ‘Baz’ Pilkington became only the second person to land the world’s most advanced naval fighter on the deck of Italian carrier Cavour.
The Brit is flying F-35s on and off the Italian flagship, helping to lay the foundations for our NATO ally to join the elite club of navies operating the stealth fighter at sea.
The Cavour, which has been in service with the Marina Militare for more than a decade, is swapping veteran Harrier jets for the Lightning – and the same short take-off/vertical landing variant (the ‘B’ model) as used by the US Marine Corps, Fleet Air Arm and RAF.
The Italian carrier underwent extensive conversion to operate the fifth-generation F-35 jets. Ultimately she’ll be able to host ten of the jets in her hangar and six on the flight deck.
Like HMS Queen Elizabeth before her, the Cavour has sailed to the Eastern Seaboard of the USA for her initial trials with two F-35s from the US Marine Corps squadron, one flown by Major Brad Leeman, the second by Lt Cdr Pilkington.
After completing his F-35 training with the US Marine Corps a couple of years ago, the lieutenant commander remained Stateside, joining the marines’ Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX 23) based at ‘Pax’ River air base in Maryland.
There the Brit was assigned to the F-35 Integrated Test Force – the world’s most experienced unit when it comes to operating the jet.
As with Queen Elizabeth’s first visit to the same waters in the autumn of 2018, the debut of the jets aboard ITS Cavour helps write the Italians’ ‘operator’s manual’ for using the state-of-the-art Lightnings: deck handling, refuelling, launch and recovery by day and night, safe movement of the aircraft around the deck.
And as with the UK, the Italians have trained their personnel assigned to fly, maintain and safely operate the F-35 in the USA.
