St Louis Class Protected Cruiser USS Milwaukee pictured at Mare Island Navy Yard on April 27th 1916.Under the temporary command of Lieutenant William F. Newton acting as Coast Torpedo Force Commander,Milwaukee sailed on January 5th 1917 for Eureka, California, to assist in salvaging the U.S. Navy Submarine H-3 which had run aground off Humboldt Bay on December 14th 1916. On January 13th, while attempting to float the Submarine and disregarding the recommendations of local mariners,the Cruiser stranded in the first line of breakers at Samoa, California, off Eureka. Four hundred twenty-one enlisted and 17 officers were rescued safely by the Humboldt Bay Life-Saving Station and local volunteers but attempts to salvage her were unsuccessful.H-3 was ultimately salvaged and returned to service.Milwaukee was decommissioned on March 6th 1917 and a storm in November 1918 broke her in two. Her name was struck from the Naval Vessel Register June 23rd 1919 and her hulk was sold on August 5th 1919.

Lead Ship,Protected Cruiser USS New Orleans pictured in 1899.She was laid down in 1895 as Amazonas for the Brazilian Navy at Armstrong,Mitchell & Company Shipyards at Elswick,Newcastle-upon-Tyne,launched on December 4th 1896, purchased by the U.S. Navy whilst under construction on March 16th 1898; and commissioned March 18th 1898 at Gravesend.
