Denver Class Protected Cruiser USS Chattanooga pictured fitting out at Brooklyn Navy Yard on October 1st 1904...She was one of six Denver-Class Protected Cruisers ordered for the USN on December 14th 1899. She was laid down at Crescent Shipyard of Elizabethport, New Jersey on March 29th 1900, and launched on March 7th 1903. Construction was much slower than contracted (the contracted completion date was June 14th 1902), so the US Government cancelled the contract and took possession of the part-completed ship, which was moved to Brooklyn Navy Yard for finishing in October 1903. Chattanooga was commissioned on October 11th 1904, after sea trials in January 1905, during which she reached a speed of 16.65 knots in a four-hour trial, she reported to the Atlantic Fleet. She was sold for scrap on March 8th 1930.
