Harry Dewolfe Class AOPS

Unread post by Annapolis265 »

The RCN will commission the first of six Harry Dewolfe Class Arctic and Ocean Patrol Ships (AOPS) later this year. These ships are a new type and new design of ice capable patrol ships. I will provide details of the purpose and characteristics of these ships in future posts. They are unique Canadian ships with the name ship due to commission in September of this year.

The Government of Canada announced a short while ago that two additional Harry Dewolfe Class will be constructed for the Canadian Coast Guard as replacements for smaller aging offshore patrol ships. Delivery dates were not discussed as contracts must be negotiated. The principle differences from their naval cousins will be the absence of weapons and different surveillance/navigation/ communications systems. The Coast Guard will also receive 16 new ships to replace aging buoy tenders, light icebreakers and other old vessels. Details have yet to be determined for these units.

This is good news for the Coast Guard and the shipbuilders.

footnote; Harry Dewolfe, generally known as "Hard-Over Harry" was a legendary wartime skipper who made his name driving HMCS Haida in 1943 (Arctic) and 1944 (10th DF, Western Approaches.

The future HMCS Harry Dewolfe will start sea trials before year end and the future Margaret Brooke will be launched by late November this year. She will be in a state of further completion then the Harry Dewolfe was at the time of launch.

The first AOPS, Harry Dewolfe, has completed two sets of builder's sea trials and is now expected, provided shipyard closure due to Corvid 19 is somehow abated, to be delivered to the RCN by the end of June 2020.
