Hello darkness, my old friend

Dusk on the edge of Antarctica and the Royal Navy’s icebreaker and polar survey ship HMS Protector delivers supplies and stores to one of the UK’s key research stations.
With the austral autumn about to begin, Protector paid her final visit to the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) base at Rothera – its largest in the region – to offload stores and cargo ahead of the upcoming Antarctic winter.
Visits to Rothera over the past two years have been few, making this Covid-secure stay even more critical to the year-round work of the station team and scientists there.
Among the items delivered by Protector were tonnes of building materials for construction of the base’s new Discovery building to allow BAS to continue their vital research for decades to come and other supplies and kit to support operations from Rothera’s runway/airfield.
Just 22 hardy souls – down from the summer complement of 100 – will spend the winter at the station on Adelaide Island, which lies 1,250 kilometres from Cape Horn, 1,800 kilometres from the Falkland Islands and 14,000 kilometres from the UK.

Royal Navy icebreaker HMS Protector has completed her Antarctic scientific mission for this season safeguarding birdlife and laying the groundwork for further research.

Sailors cleared up rubbish then monitored birds on one of the most important islands in the region for our feathered friends, and left behind special markers at key locations around the peninsula, markers which will help them and others accurately – and safely – survey Antarctic waters.

The Plymouth-based survey ship is on a five-year mission, splitting her time between the hemispheres – from boreal summers venturing into the Arctic to austral summers working in her more traditional realm of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Royal Navy ice patrol ship completes Antarctic mission

The Royal Navy’s ice patrol ship HMS Protector has completed a scientific and conservation mission to the Antarctic.

The ship covered 7,000 nautical miles during its annual foray in the frozen continent, helping scientific research and environmental efforts in one of the world’s most remote and inhospitable regions.

The mission – known as Operation Austral – upholds the UK’s commitment to the Antarctic Treaty, protecting this precious place from harm.

Commanding Officer of HMS Protector, Captain Tom Weaver said: “We are reminded every day by the stunning wildlife and environment that surrounds us. Operating in Antarctica is a rare privilege.
