My previous post showing a purported view of DULIO as built is incorrectly labled. The ship shown is one of the CAVOURs given the raised position of the midships turret! The 1931 view of the ANDREA DORIA clearly shows the position of mid turret on the lower level. The DULIOs were a slightly modified CAVOUR class design in order to save time on getting them built. Considering all the various delays the 5 BBs faced, the hoped for time savings did not happen.

At any rate the 2 DULIOs had a slightly better distribution of weight and 6" secondaries in lieu of the 4.7" on the earlier 3 CAVOURs. :) DFO

Two nice views of different camo schemes on CAIO DULIO in WW2...... ;) Looked impressive, but these radically rebuilt old BBs were not a good use of resources and material. DFO

Triple 305 mm turrets pictured being constructed for Italian Dreadnoughts, at the Vickers-Terni factory, La Spezia, first half of the 1910s....Vickers-Terni, (founded in 1905 as a consortium between the English firm Vickers and the Italian steelworks of Terni, acquired in 1929 by the Odero-Terni-Orlando - OTO - firm, and renamed OTO-Melara in 1953, now part of Leonardo) was granted the contract for the 305/46 calibre Modello 1909 guns to be built for the Battleship Conte di Cavour, and then for those of the similar Battleship Andrea Doria; those of the three other Battleships were built either in the Vickers factory in the UK, or at the Elswick-led Armstrong-Pozzuoli firm near Naples. The Vickers-style turrets could be easily distinguished from their Elswick counterparts by their curved sides, compared to the flatter ones of their rivals. The delivery of the guns for Conte di Cavour, programmed for June 1913, suffered however great delays; so great that, to shave off a few months, it was decided to use on her the guns already completed for the Andrea Doria. While this allowed the former ship to be completed by April 1st 1915, this swap meant that the latter one would not be delivered to the Regia Marina until March 13th 1916.

Lead Ship, Battleship RN Andrea Doria pictured during her reconstruction refit at Trieste in 1937...In March 1937, she started her major reconstruction, where she arrived on the 30th. The refit began on April 8th at Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico Shipyards. Andrea Doria was still out of service in 1939 when the Second World War broke out in Europe. Work was finished by October 1940, and on the 26th of the month, she rejoined the Italian fleet in the 5th Division in Taranto.
