Admiral Bob Stephens RCN

Unread post by timlewin »

Dear Rolfe, especially as he was your friend and through you, became my friend, and through all of you who are in one way or another part of our Victory commemorations, this is for all of you.

In 2016 the splendid people at Wargaming generously sponsored a large part of our victory Day events; these included these filmed interviews with two of our veterans. Fred Jewett who sailed with my own father in the Ashanti in the Arctic and Mediterranean, 22 Russian Convoys. And the other, Bob Stephens, RCN.

Admiral Bob slipped away a few days ago, following almost immediately his wife who preceded him, just. Admiral bob Stephens fought in the War in the RCN with the RN, he was an engineer, in this he followed his own father, Admiral Stephens senior, one of the principal architects of the construction of the RCN and about whom he wrote an excellent book. Nobody lives forever, but in the annals of the RCN, and our collective hearts, Bob Stephens will live much longer than our simple mortal lives gave him. Those were the days when “We were all in it together”……………..

Here he is, with Fred, 96 this year, we speak every week.

Tim, note the flags of our veterans at the foremast.

Dear Tim,

My sincere apologies for the delay.

thanks Jim, he was a charming man, his wife died a couple of weeks earlier, he went quickly thereafter. He lived near Cambridge and sometimes, when he was better, gave lectures to some of the schools and Russian communities I introduced him to. His book about the life and work of his RCN father is fascinating, very detailed about the analysis of the quality of ships and growth of the RCN, an engineer's book by an engineer.

Tim: I went to high school with VAdm Stephens' son Michael in the late 1960's. The Admiral was then the Commander of HMC Dockyard in Halifax. The Admiral was well respected.
