HMS Elfin was built as a Torpedo Recovery Vessel for the Royal Navy in 1933. She initially operated as part of the torpedo trials establishment HMS Vernon and she was based at Portland in Dorset. During the Second World War she was based at Blyth in Northumberland and was the Depot Ship for the 6th Submarine Flotilla which was based there. In 1941 her name was changed to HMS Nettle and she was transferred to the River Clyde.
After the war she returned to Portland and had a civilian crew and she was sold for scrapping in 1957. She was sold a year later to the Amsterdam Drydock Company until 1985 and had several further name changes, including Droogdok 18, HOM7 and TCA1.
She was transferred to a preservation society in 1995 and renamed Elfin. She has been restored and is preserved in Wormerveer, the Netherlands.
