It is most definitely British weather out there so we must nearly be home. 💨☂️🌊
Today we disembark our resident flight, 820 NAS and the one that has furthered our capability during #Westlant18 with #CommandoMerlin 845 NAS Safe home to @RNASCuldrose @RNASYeovilton

Re. Today we disembark our resident flight methinks that's something of a contradiction in terms ... 'resident' = to remain/stay somewhere permanently or on long term basis.

Nothing changes eh - the zoomie(s):-
- prior to deployment - last to leave home = last to embark
- on completion of deployment - first to disembark - first to arrive home
Just saying ;)
845 NAS's home-coming after 4 months deployed, filmed and streamed live from 'FURIOUS 4' in the 4 aircraft formation.
The video shows the airborne recovery to Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton.
12:40 into the video shows the brilliant moment family members were reunited with our squadron men and women.

On Sunday 9th December 2018, the men, women and Commando Merlin helicopters of 845 NAS returned to Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton after four months deployed on board the colossal HMS Queen Elizabeth. The squadron has paved the way for the next half-century of rotary wing support to the Carrier Strike Group, as well as laying the foundations for the next generation of amphibious operations from the Royal Navy's new aircraft carriers. Many thanks to Ian Harding and Kevin Wills for the fantastic imagery and your support of the Commando Helicopter Force.

815 SQDN
From Navy News
After four months away and 120 hours airborne in support of Britain’s biggest warship and her jets, 213 Flight and their Wildcat returned home to Yeovilton, mission complete.

Since leaving their 815 Naval Air Squadron home in mid-August, the Flight, which was based on frigate HMS Monmouth – due home in Devonport tomorrow – has flown 120 hours.

Those 120 hours included the first Wildcat landings on both new tanker RFA Tidespring and new carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth during the latter’s maiden trials with the new F-35 stealth fighter.

The agile helicopter also provided smooth rides for TV presenter/adventurer and honorary Royal Marine Bear Grylls and Prince Michael of Kent and worked with multiple units of the US Navy to develop tactics vital to the future operations of the carrier.

And first and foremost, the Wildcat – callsign Blackjack – helped Monmouth in her primary duty of providing security for the 65,000-tonne carrier throughout her trials off the Eastern Seaboard of the USA.

Flight Commander Lieutenant Ollie Brooksbank was met by his wife Frankie and their two-year-old daughter Evelyn.

"It’s great to be home,” he said. “We've had a pretty exciting time over the past four months and what we have seen during this period is probably setting the tone for the Royal Navy for the next 50 years. I look forward to bringing lessons back into the Wildcat Maritime Force.”

Sophie Hume waited to be reunited with husband, Flight Observer Lieutenant James Hume:

"It has felt like a very long time and I'm so excited to see him,” she said. “It’s been hard but I'm so proud of his achievements.”

Also welcoming 213 Flight home was 815’s Commanding Officer Commander Jamieson Stride who praised the small team of air and ground crew for a “hugely successful deployment”.

He continued: “Their Wildcat – superbly maintained by 213 Flight engineers – was always serviceable and available for the wide range of tasks the Carrier Strike Group staff required. 213 Flight's families should be rightly proud of the team's achievements and I wish them all a very Merry Christmas."

Port stops included Mayport, Florida, Norfolk, Virginia, Charleston, South Carolina, and Baltimore in Maryland, allowing personnel to sample the delights of US culture along most of the Eastern Seaboard.

In Baltimore, for Maryland Fleet Week, the ship was open to visitors and the Flight was able to show the Wildcat to civilians and military personnel alike.

824 SQDN - MERLINS
From Navy news:
"After a great deal of hard work and determination, nine pilots, six observers and seven aircrewmen were awarded with their ‘Flying Wings’ at a formal ceremony proudly attended by their families, friends and senior officers from the Royal Navy.
The ceremony, which marks the official start of a flying career within the Fleet Air Arm, was performed this morning in the hangar of 824 Naval Air Squadron (NAS), the unit which trains students in every aspect of the Merlin helicopter, equipping them with the knowledge and skills that will be required once they deploy on operations at sea.
Commanding Officer of 824 Naval Air Squadron, Commander Martin Russell said: “Today marks the culmination of 12 months of hard work for staff and students. We are immensely proud of the standard the students have achieved but the hard work isn’t over. As Frontline Merlin aircrew they will be responsible for defending the UK mainland and the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers from any possible submarine threat.”
Guest of honour awarding the Wings and trophies was Commodore Bellfield, who also presented four Air Traffic Controllers with their Certificates of Competency."

Bearing in mind that:
"Wildcats will not routinely embark on the QEC aircraft carriers but it is planned that a minimum of two Wildcats will be embarked on escort vessels within the Carrier Task Group. Mounting the M3M or GPMG guns they will have a critical force protection role, particularly when entering or leaving harbour and in confined waters. At sea they will be held at readiness to provide protection from small surface threats probably with LMM and Sea Venom fitted."

Some information about the Merlin Mk4 845 Sqdn plus photos some taken onboard Q.E.

Exclusive inside look at the Royal Navy’s upgraded Merlin helicopter
Henry Jones spent a day getting to know the new Merlin Mk4 with 845 Naval Air Squadron at RNAS Yeovilton.
Returning to RNAS Yeovilton after several hours in the air, one of the crew smiles and jokes “lots of aircraft out today – Russia will be watching”. Fair enough; Yeovilton is home to the world’s most advanced amphibious battlefield helicopter, the newly upgraded Merlin Mk4.
The £388 million upgrade has transformed the capability of the aircraft. The Merlin now has folding rotors and a folding tail, a flare system to evade heating seeking missiles, and a touch screen cockpit suite. Roughly 95% of the internal wiring is also brand new.
