Today HMS Forth sailed from Portsmouth for the South Atlantic to be permanently deployed as the newest Falkland Islands Patrol Vessel (FIPV).

A history – the Royal Navy’s Falkland Islands patrol vessels
Today HMS Forth sailed from Portsmouth for the South Atlantic to be permanently deployed as the newest Falkland Islands Patrol Vessel (FIPV). In this guest article, Chris Sutton who served on some of the FIPVs provides a history of the RN vessels assigned to this role.
After the cessation of hostilities between the U.K. and Argentina in 1982, the Royal Navy committed a relatively large number of escorts and auxiliaries to the continued protection of the Falkland Islands whilst RAF Mount Pleasant was under construction. At the time, the RN escort fleet, whilst far more numerous than today, was stretched to maintain prolonged South Atlantic operations and the constant deployments were taking a heavy toll on the ships of the fleet. It became increasingly obvious that the economy of the Islands also needed to be protected and policed and to this end, three North Sea oil rig support ships were purchased outright from Seaforth Maritime.

I read somewhere that HMS Clyde is only leased and her lease is up and rumour is she could be sold to Brazil.

Her final captain has been Lieutenant Commander Richard Skelton, his second spell on the ship, five years after being her Executive Officer.
He said: “HMS Clyde has been a very good ship, so reliable and she’s had to be – the South Atlantic’s not a forgiving place. She was designed for a particular task, to be the Falkland Islands patrol vessel, something which she has done without return to the UK and without major docking for 12 years. The ability to demonstrate Britain’s global reach and to provide support to the islanders is critical to what we do and is precisely what Defence is about.

Oh really............what about 2011 & 2017:-
Clyde's high and dry as she's out of the water for the first time in five years
09 January 2017
This is something no-one has seen in more than half a decade – HMS Clyde, high and dry.
The patrol ship has been almost constantly on duty in and around the Falkland Islands since her last overhaul in 2011.
