GRANDADS’ WARS INSPIRE SAILOR BEN ON HMS TRENT’S NEXT MISSION
27 March 2021
New patrol ship HMS Trent sails to the Mediterranean next week with a young officer inspired by the wartime exploits of his grandparents.

"Both fought in the bitter Battle of the Atlantic – but on opposing sides.
Ernest Hoffmeister served in the Atlantic and Arctic determined to keep the UK’s sea lanes open, while Ben’s maternal grandfather Erwin Menzel crewed a U-boat determined to strangle Britain’s lifelines."

Royal Navy

An iconic wartime paint job has been revived by HMS Tamar for her maiden deployment this summer.
'Dazzle paint' - various shades of black, white and grey in strange or jarring shapes - have been applied to the hull, echoing the livery of Royal Navy vessels in the two world wars.
The paint scheme was introduced in a bid to confuse enemy U-boat crews and gunners when aiming at Royal Navy ships and despite advances in technology, the scheme can still trick the eye at dawn and dusk or when a ship is close to shore.
The aim is to paint all five second-generation River-class ships with the dazzle scheme in due course to give them a unique identity in the Fleet.

TAMAR

Royal Marines Jet Suit Boarding Ex

Thanks to Royal Marines LLC for setting up a very successful exercise testing the capability of the Gravity Jet Suit to support RM boarding ops. Huge effort from 42cdo, 47cdo, HMS Tamar, Qinetiq and DSTL. The footage speaks for itself.
